  • DVD Ice Princess (Full Screen Edition)

Like The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Ice Princess is a fairy tale for girls who dream about what they can be. Casey Carlyle (Michelle Trachtenberg of Buffy the Vampire Slayer) is a physics geek who discovers a mathematical formula for those tricky figure-skating jumps that her fellow high schoolers are performing. It's all part of her plan to nab a juicy college scholarship, but a funny thing happens on the way to Harvard: Casey decides that in the name of research she should try the jumps herself, and she discovers that not only does she have talent, she likes figure skating. Will she throw away her Ivy League dreams in favor of those frilly dresses? Ice Princess isn't a movie that will change the world, and it treads lightly on the downsides of the sport (it costs a lot of money, rivalries are bitter, careers are short, and long hours mean less time to party!); there's also more than one unfortunate reference to how skating makes Casey look "hot." But just as Casey says: "What's wrong with wanting to feel strong and graceful and beautiful?", what's wrong with a movie that lets people explore their options and make decisions for themselves? The on-ice action is believable, and Trachtenberg is especially appealing in the lead role. With Kim Cattrall as the snarling coach, Joan Cusack as Casey's anxious mom, Trevor Blumas as the light romantic interest, Hayden Panettiere as the rival, and champion skaters Michelle Kwan and Brian Boitano as themselves.--David Horiuchi

    Really Graet 2 Get

I own this DVD and it's great if you just wanna dig out some popcorn and relax on a rainy day.The music videos are good (Aly and AJ have me singing No One in my sleep and when I'm doing math hw)However Cahliegh Peters' voice is a little too "bleh" for me. It reminded me of-well never mind. The movie is inspirring and fun to watch. I take skating now and yes evryone there is younger than me (so?) It also shows what real skating is-hard competition and some times you lose. Of course someone falls in love but the mush's over quickly. No big. It was good though. Freinds of mine view it too. I suggest this. I really do. (Buy it!!!!)

    I love this film!!

This film is great. It just shows what people can do when they put thier mind to it. It is about this science geek who has to do a project and couldnt think of what t do it on and then watched a program and it was ice skating. so she decided to do it on figure skating she then thought she would apply herself to the project to make it feel more her but she becomes attached to figure skating and her taecher says she has talent but her mother hates figure skating and would never want her daughter to do it. She has an harvard interview and cant decide what to chose figure skating or harvard. Watch the film and find out.
This filmI would recommend to all ages and sexes beacuse it is haert warming and makes you feel good inside and may even make you cry. I watched this film and since Im a dancer and everyhting I thought I would get the soundtrack cd and it was great so I would recommend you to get both!
    thanx for reading. Jacob

This made $24 million? That's triple what I expected.

It's a shame- Ice Princess could've really been something. Aside from Disney completely screwing up and revealing the entire plot in the trailers for it, Ice Princess is of course, a more pre-teen oriented movie outing than a serious one. And that kind of surprised me, because a few plot points are pretty mature. Not dealing with sexuality or death or anything like that, but more on the big decisions in life. There's a lot dealing with parental guidance here, but it's all toned town for families. Had Ice Princess been done by a different director or studio, it could've been much more than the typical "underdog believes in herself and does great things". The scenes dealing with parents and what they want were done very well, but you can tell that some footage was cut because it may have been a little too intense for a PG movie. But fear not, frumpy parents, Ice Princess is, overall, the typical live action fare from Disney, and you won't object to anything in it.

Ice Princess is the story about a nerdy girl, Casey Carlyle, trying to get into Harvard. She needs to work on a special, personal project, and for this, she chooses something she likes and isn't half bad at- ice skating. She discovers formulas for perfecting moves and improving the skaters' overall form. Yeah, it's far fetched, but it works, and eventually, she joins the skating team. Unfortunately for her, the skating coach is also the mother of the top skater, and is pretty strict. Not too strict like Full Metal Jacket style, but she isn't that nice. Things go ok for Casey- she has a love interest in the zamboni driver at the rink, she improves her own skating techniques, and she befriends everyone on the team eventually. But, this is cutting into her college-prep time, and her mom won't have it. Her mom's one of those typical, "my daughter needs the best, which is what I have in mind, and not really what she wants" types. So she's 100% against skating in the competitions for the most part, seeing as how it has nothing to do with Harvard. Things go even worse at a competition when Casey's coach buys her a new pair of skates (since her's are pretty beat up) during a competition. It takes a few days to break in a new pair, and Casey learns this the hard way when they cause her an injury, losing a competition. She isn't told about how long it takes to break in/practice in them until after, and also learns that her coach does this to many other girls. Things heat up, and she has to make a huge decision in either going for college, or getting back up and giving the competition another go.

Amazingly, the ending isn't entirely predictable, but everything else is. And to make matters worse, they don't spend enough time developing things. Casey has an almost Mean Girl-like confrontation with the star skater early on, but they never do anything else with it, or show much of the two in school. Casey has no trouble becoming a top skater, despite us never seeing her actually train for things, and she's never too stressed out about her problems. The parents are the only ones who get much in the way of development, and even then, some of their dialogue is a joke. I love how they know what to say when Casey gives them a bit of a twist, and they reply with a huge speech about...well, everything. And just like in The Mighty Ducks movies, they use blatant body doubles. When Casey does an amazing stunt, the camera scrolls up, but then cuts away before they show the face. Most trick scenes are done from a distance so we can't see this, but in doing this, it's obvious. I don't know, I shouldn't expect so much from a movie dealing with this subject matter (especially one for families), but the times are changing, and we deserve something new. I should also mention that Juliana Cannarozzo does a great job as Zoe Bloch. Aside from being probably the only true bad-ass in the movie, she doesn't seem like a total poser, though she's the complete opposite in real life. You wouldn't think that this girl is just barely 16 years old based on her skills and performance.

Visually, the movie looks good. Only some outdoor scenes have noticeable grain, and colors look soft, but everything else is fantastic. There's hardly any blurring or any other problems- everything here is solid. As for the audio, the movie makes a good use of shifting sound. As a skater moves around the rink, the sound truly does shift from the speakers, making you feel thrown into the movie. This is a top dvd transfer.

While some people saw the audio commentary as insightful, I found it annoying. It's almost as if they recorded this at a slumber party for the cast. It features Michelle Trachtenberg, Hayden Panettiere, Trevor Blumas and Kirsten Olson, and is mostly them going on about what they liked about the movie and how great everyone was. Sure, there's some nice info that they reveal, like the age differences between them, real birthdays, how long some tricks took to do, and pointing out the body doubles. 'funny how Juliana is the only one who didn't need one. The cast does tend to just watch the movie more than offer insight, and there are a lot of long pauses. We also get two music videos, one from Aly & AJ for the song "No One" and one by Caleigh Peters for "Reach". These...both suck completely and should be ignored. Both these artists will not be around this time next year, so I guess I shouldn't take it so hard. They're the typical one-time stars you'd see doing music videos on the Disney Channel. Finally are a few deleted scenes. None of these add anything to the movie, especially the alternate opening, and it's easy to see why they were cut- they would've dragged the movie down even more. The alternate opening is especially bad because you can tell it would've had some pitiful voice over on top of it.

Had Disney tried something new, this could've been a big impact of a family movie. But of course, they didn't, and it turned into the usual fare. It's easy to see why this one did so bad at the box office now.

    The Pacifier (Widescreen Edition) DVD

Vin Diesel is game to soften his tough-guy image in The Pacifier, in which he plays hot-shot Navy S.E.A.L. Shane Wolfe, whose latest mission goes awry when the scientist he's sent to rescue is popped off before he can tell Wolfe where he's hidden some Top Secret software something-or-other. Before you can say Kindergarten Cop, Wolfe is assigned guard duty at the scientist's family home, where he's left with some unruly kids when the widow (Faith Ford) takes off to Switzerland to claim her hubby's safety deposit box under the guidance of Wolfe's superior officer. The trouble with this paint-by-numbers fish-out-of-water kiddie comedy is that Diesel himself is a fish out of water in the movie--he's no comic and is far funnier when he's unintentionally spoofing macho... Miss Congeniality 2 - Armed and Fabulous (Widescreen Edition) DVD

F.B.I. operative Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) famously went undercover in a beauty pageant a while back, and now she's supposedly so recognizable that her only use to the agency is as a pretty public representative. Dumped by her boyfriend (whom Benjamin Bratt wisely decided not to portray this time around), a gloomy Gracie goes along with the promo biz until her friend, Miss United States (Heather Burns), is kidnapped along with pageant official Stan Fields (William Shatner) in Las Vegas. Bullock still has perk to please her fans, but neither she nor her awkward alter-ego has any purpose in a sequel to a movie released five years prior. The result is a desperately unfunny, feature-length commercial for Las Vegas tourism, with outdated homosexual stereotypes (Diedrich Bader, as Gracie's... More Info about this DVD

    National Treasure (Widescreen Edition) DVD

Like a Hardy Boys mystery on steroids, National Treasure offers popcorn thrills and enough boyish charm to overcome its rampant silliness. Although it was roundly criticized as a poor man's rip-off of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Da Vinci Code, it's entertaining on its own ludicrous terms, and Nicolas Cage proves once again that one actor's infectious enthusiasm can compensate for a multitude of movie sins. The contrived plot involves Cage's present-day quest for the ancient treasure of the Knights Templar, kept secret through the ages by Freemasons past and present. Finding the treasure requires the theft of the Declaration of Independence (there are crucial treasure clues on the back, of course!), so you can add "caper comedy" to this Jerry Bruckheimer... Hitch (Widescreen Edition) DVD

Will Smith's easygoing charm makes Hitch the kind of pleasant, uplifting romantic comedy that you could recommend to almost anyone--especially if there's romance in the air. As suave Manhattan dating consultant Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, Smith plays up the smoother, sophisticated side of his established screen persona as he mentors a pudgy accountant (Kevin James) on the lessons of love. The joke, of course, is that Hitch's own love life is a mess, and as he coaches James toward romance with a rich, powerful, and seemingly inaccessible beauty named Allegra (Amber Valetta), he's trying too hard to impress a savvy gossip columnist (Eva Mendes) with whom he's fallen in love. Through mistaken identities and mismatched couples, director Andy Tennant brings the same light touch that made... More Info about this DVD

If you're a ten-year-old girl, this sequel to Disney's 2001 hit will completely transfix you. How could it not? Bubbly Mia (Anne Hathaway), the American teenager who in the first film learned she was actually European royalty, finishes college and--whoosh!--heads off to Genovia, where he's given a closet full of fabulous clothes and jewelry in preparation to rule the kingdom under the tutelage of grandmother Julie Andrews. Throw in a horse and a volatile but innocent romantic attraction to the dreamy young stud (Chris Pine) who's also vying for the throne, and you have the kind of stuff that prepubescent girls rhapsodize about at slumber parties. Oh--and there's a slumber party here, too, featuring a bevy of cute, international young princesses mattress-surfing down a giant slide.... More Info about this DVD
