Review(s): DVD Classic Cartoon Favorites, Vol. 8 - Holiday Celebration With Mickey & Pals
A SOLID COLLECTION!
I've been a bit tough on some of these recent Disney collections due to the fact that all or most of the shorts were already appearing on the Disney Treasures sets and so getting those were a much better value. But in this case, only three of these are on those Treasures sets and each is on a different one so it makes this a definite one to pick up. Certaintly they will eventually be on the Treasures editions but until then I would recommend this set. Be advised that even though it says holiday celebration not all of these shorts really have a holiday theme. Some are simply shorts that take place in the winter.
Rescue Dog 1947 - Pluto is a rescue dog in the snow-covered mountains of the frozen north. But when he tangles with a playful baby seal, it turns out that he is the one who needs to be rescued.
Toy Tinkers - 1949 - It's Christmas time, and Chip 'n' Dale fight with Donald for the goodies under his tree. This was nominated for an Oscar as best short subject
Corn Chips 1951 - Donald cons Chip and Dale into shoveling his snowy sidewalk, and ends up shoveling popcorn
Clock Watcher - 1945 - Donald takes a job as a gift wrapper in a department store.
Mickey's Good Deed 1932 - On Christmas Eve, Mickey needs money to help out a poor mother's desperate children. So he sells Pluto to a rich family- whose spoiled brat gives the pooch a real run for his money. Black & white
Lend a Paw 1941 - Pluto is mean to a pesky little kitten, but saves it from drowning in a frozen river, thanks to his good conscience (the angel and devil in his head battle it out).
Peculiar Penguins 1935 - A dance piece from the South Pole. Peter catches a fish to show his love for Polly. The fish expands when she eats it, making her look fat, and Peter foolish.
Some new to DVD titles here & a few favorites.

I bought this for my almost 3yr old twins, and from the first showing, I kept hearing giggling and laughing as they watched the cartoons. My girls already are familiar with some fairy tales, so they really loved "The Three Little Pigs" and "The Pied Piper". I highly recommend this DVD and think it is a great buy for parents with young children. Despite what the description says, this is NOT a "NEW" collection of wild and wacky adventures. It is a collection of 8 older Disney shorts, mostly from the 40's and 50's that have a summer/vacation them to them. It's a decent collection but these eight toons hardly rank as some of Disney's all-time best. I'll only give a synopsis on what I think the best episodes are:
"No Sail" is from 1945 and features Donald and Goofy.
"Two Weeks Vacation" is from 1952 and is a Goofy short.
"Trailer Horn" is from 1950 and has one of my favorite themes where Chip and Dale annoy the heck out of Donald Duck. This time the pair keep jumping on Donald's car horn as Donald seethes in anger.
"Old Sequoia" is a Donald Short from 1945.

***** Five Stars for the cartoons themselves! I give the low *** three start rating because WE ALREADY HAVE THEM ON DVD!
This collection is a cheaply put-together, un restored, re-release of cartoons from the DISNEY TREASURES TINS! THESE ARE NOT FROM THE SAME MASTERS! So why buy something you already have?
1) THE UGLY DUCKLING (1939) also on the Silly Symphonies Tin.
2) COUNTRY COUSIN (1936) also on the Silly Symphonies Tin.
3) FERDINAND THE BULL (1938) to be on the upcoming Disney Rarities Tin.
4) WIND IN THE WILLOWS (1949) segement from the feature Icabod & Mr. Toad. Amazon sells the entire feature for just $15.99
With the TIN DVD releases on limited availability, I guess Disney hopes those who missed out... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Jack Cutting DVD Release Date: Released the 16 August 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

The mischievous chipmunks Chip and Dale began as the unnamed rodent-pests in "Private Pluto" (1943); they acquired names in their third film, "Chip an' Dale" (1947). Although the duo became a mainstay of the Disney shorts during the late '40s and '50s, primarily as adversaries for Donald Duck, the characters never quite gelled. Their appearance and the pitch and comprehensibility of their voices change noticeably from film to film. Chip (the smarter one with the smaller nose) and Dale (the dim one with the larger nose and, often, buck teeth) are at their best when they're trying to protect their home and acorns from Donald ("Chip an' Dale," "Out on a Limb") or Pluto ("Food for Feudin'"). They're less appealing when they become aggressors ("Three for Breakfast"). The other three entries in...
