Be warned. This is NOT a special edition with added footage. This "Recut" version is a drastically shortened 5 hour cut of the original almost 7 hour long epic mini-series. The original uncut version is still available on Amazon's website. Why Sony/Columbia is releasing this is beyond me. Who, aside from those with ADD would want to purchase a truncated version? The series is presented on 2 discs, compared to 3 discs on the original. It is in fullscreen with 2.0 mono sound and optional English and French subtitles.
As a history major, I pruned and picked away at North and South looking for historical inaccuracies, and found little if any. This was a great series, with enough humor, drama, and juicy affairs to keep everyone interested. When it first aired, I was only interested in the Orrie - Madaline drama, as it was the stuff trashy books are based on. Of course, put any trashy drama in the middle of a bigger conflict (in this case, The Civil War) and you have a recipe for a great story that wrote itself.
The crux of the story is the relationship between Orrie and George, two who meet as young men at West Pointe to become lifelong friends and enemies as they will serve on the Northern and Southern sides of the Civil War. The mini series does a fantastic job combing the historical... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Richard T. Persons who collect good Civil War fiction will love this one.
See a younger Don Johnson here in a major role too for the fans of DJ.
Similiar to the old favorites GONE WITH THE WIND...NORTH & SOUTH...THE BLUE AND THE GRAY. If you enjoyed or own any of those DVD's you won't want to miss adding this mini series to your collection of fine, fictional Civil War drama.
I have long awaited this to come out on DVD. I have tired of and no longer use VHS tapes on my large screen DVD. I cannot tell you just yet about the screen quality of the DVD as mine has not yet arrived at this writing.
The story line is great and the actors all have done a fine job in this story and best of all, the price is great for a great movie. More Info about this DVD Director(s): Virgil W. Vogel - Harry Falk DVD Release Date: Released the 26 July 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

Out of circulation for a quarter-century following the death of producer-star John Wayne, Island in the Sky is a tale of survival focused on the pilot (Wayne) and crew of a DC-3 forced to crashland somewhere in the uncharted Canadian wilderness, and the fellow airmen (Lloyd Nolan, James Arness, Andy Devine, Paul Fix) determined to find them before hunger and the 70-below winter do them in. The movie, set in the post-WWII era when military and commercial aviation were still intertwined, was written by bestselling novelist Ernest K. Gann and directed by William A. Wellman, an aviation-movie veteran whose Wings won the first-ever Academy Award (192728).
Wellman resolutely downplays the histrionics and conventional heroics; Wayne indulges in none of the macho... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): John Wayne - Lloyd Nolan Director(s): William A. Wellman DVD Release Date: Released the 02 August 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

John Wayne personally produced many of his '50s films, which is why some of them have languished in corporate limbo following his death. The High and the Mighty was one of his most popular vehicles (no pun intended). This long, necessarily sedentary drama aboard an endangered airliner is a CinemaScope bridge between 1932's Grand Hotel and 1970s disaster movies. Despite Wayne's iconic presence as a pilot--now copilot--who survived the plane crash that wiped out his family, it's an ensemble movie with an impressive cast: Robert Stack sharing the cockpit, Oscar® nominees Claire Trevor and Jan Sterling, Laraine Day, Robert Newton, Paul Kelly, John Qualen, Regis Toomey, the ubiquitous Paul Fix, and director William A. Wellman's good-luck character actor Douglas Fowley.... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): John Wayne - Claire Trevor - Laraine Day Director(s): William A. The German offensive in December 1944 became the basis for this all-star Hollywood take on the Battle of the Bulge. Henry Fonda is an officer who predicts the assault, Robert Ryan and Dana Andrews are Army brass skeptical of his intuitions, and Robert Shaw (his hair dyed yellow and his eyes glinting with malice) is a German officer leading the tank attack. Shaw is certainly the most compelling thing about the film, especially in his philosophical debates with ambivalent underling Hans Christian Blech. Elsewhere, the movie jumps around to sidebar stories (cowardly James MacArthur becomes a leader, wheeler-dealer Telly Savalas falls in love) while messing around with the historical facts of the battle. There are interesting episodes, such as the Malmedy massacre of American POWs and the...
