DVD Rumble Fish (Special Edition)
The second of Francis Ford Coppola's films based on the popular juvenile novels of S.E. Hinton (the first being The Outsiders), Rumble Fish split critics into opposite camps: those who admired the film for its heavily stylized indulgence, and those who hated it for the very same reason. Whatever the response, it's clearly the work of a maverick director who isn't afraid to push the limits of his innovative talent. Filmed almost entirely in black and white with an occasional dash of color for symbolic effect, this tale of alienated youth centers on gang leader Rusty James (Matt Dillon) and his band of punk pals. Rusty's got a girlfriend (Diane Lane), an older brother named Motorcycle Boy (Mickey Rourke), and a drunken father (Dennis Hopper) who've all given up trying to straighten him out. He's best at making trouble, and he pursues that skill with an enthusiastic flair that eventually catches up with him. But it's not the whacked-out story here that matters--it's the uninhibited verve of Coppola's visual approach, which includes everything from time-lapse clouds to the kind of smoky streets and alleyways that could only exist in the movies. The supporting cast includes a host of fresh faces who went on to thriving careers, including Nicolas Cage, Christopher Penn, Vincent Spano, Laurence Fishburne, and musician Tom Waits. --Jeff Shannon
This could have been a great film if Coppola had paid a little more attention to detail. What makes the Outsiders work is that when you're filming a movie that is from a particular era the people and background in the movie should look like they're from that time era. When you watched the Outsiders you knew it was 1960's Tulsa. The hairstyles, the clothes, the cars, the extras, the accents.
This is where this film falls terribly short. The setting is supposed to be 1960's or early 70's Tulsa. Many of the characters aren't even dressed like that time period. Nobody seems to have an Oklahoma accent. Matt Dillon's hair-do is circa 1981 and he's wearing this bandana like Olivia Newton- John in the Physical video. Steve is wearing these hidiously huge glasses that didn't come into style until the late 70's early 80's. One glaringly obvious screw up is the scene where Rusty James argues with Patty as she gets off of the bus and they break up. If you watch closely as they are yelling at each other in the middle of the street a late 70's or early 80's Toyota Celica-type car actually passes them on their left side! I couldn't believe it. Also, in the last part of the movie Motorcycle Boy and Rusty James are riding on the bike together and the bike is an early 80's Japanese bike! What the hell!
Francis Ford Coppola put so much effort into making this movie as stylized and detailed as possible yet I can't believe that he could allow these mistakes. If he had the details down like he did with the Outsiders this would have been an awesome movie. It seems that the great soundtrack and photographic elements were all for nothing.
Francis Ford's masterpiece
I've always felt that this was a very underrated movie. Very innovative for it's time. Besides that, this dvd is worth buying almost exclusively for Francis Ford's Commentary. That made the Godfather DVD's worth buying and this is no different. his commentary gives you an insider's look at a genius film maker at work. Plus his warmth as a human being as always comes through very strong. Can watch it over and over.
Rumble Fish
This is a old movie. Its about two brothers. Their really bad and they live in a small town where the clouds move super fast! So they break into the old mans pet store after he leaves for the night. The one brother opens all the doors to the cages! All the birds fly away. Even a little puppy goes running out the door. So he goes up to the fish tank. All the movie is in black and white but the fishes are in color. Its pretty cool. So the one brother is opening all the cages and all the animals are going free and the other brother is like "Noooooo! Don't do this." And he is almost crying. So the bad brother takes the fish tank and he gets the idea that he will set them free in the river where they will be free. And the other brother is like "Noooo! The old man already saw us up here and he will know it was us!" But the brother dosn't listen and he takes the fish tank down to the river, but the creepy cop comes out of the woods with his gun aimed at the brother with the fish tank. I wont spoil the ending. It was a good movie. And the music is done by one of the dudes in the police which is an old band that Sting played in! Pretty cool music because it makes you feel jittery.
Director Francis Coppola's adaptation of the popular S.E. Hinton novel about the price of rebellious youth is notable chiefly for the stunning cast of young actors who went on to rich and varied careers. In supporting roles, the film features the likes of Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Waits, among others. The story centers on two rival gangs in the early 1960s Midwest, and the violent turf wars that escalate and tragically claim young lives. C. Thomas Howell plays the central character who yearns to prove himself and be accepted by his older brothers' gang, while at the same time finding his first love and dreaming of a life beyond his dead end existence. Geared toward the teenage crowd, the film nonetheless features some fine direction from... I read the book being the big S.E. Hinton fan that I am and well, then I saw the movie XD I liked it a lot. Except the ending was a lot less sad then it was in the book, but it was still good. This unassuming little coming-of-age drama features Matt Dillon in the title role as a sweet, slightly dim teenager living with his older brother Mason (Jim Metzler) in a rural Oklahoma town. With an absentee father and a deceased mom, the two eke out a marginal existence; things get desperate enough for Mason to sell his and Tex's horses to have enough money for groceries. Mason is ready to graduate high school and has his sights set on Indiana University and a basketball scholarship; he has little patience for his younger brother and his antics, feeling like he has to babysit him to keep him out of trouble. Tex's partner-in-mischief is Johnny (Emilio Estevez), while Johnny's sister Jamie (Meg Tilly) is the object of Tex's crush. The two live under the stern eye of their authoritarian... Return to the pre-Internet days of 1979, when teens had KISS on their T-shirts and Led Zeppelin on their walls (wait, other than the high-waisted pants, that could be today). Richie (Matt Dillon in an electrifying debut) and Carl (Michael Kramer) are two such teens stuck in the planned community of New Granada (rural Colorado). Richie is a two-bit hood in Jackie Earle Haley (Bad News Bears) mode. Carl, his partner in mischief (breaking curfew, setting off firecrackers), comes from a more stable environment. Once a gun enters the picture, petty crime leads to tragedy and then apocalyptic revenge. Over the Edge gets the details right: the kids, the era, and their frustration with an uncomprehending adult world. At times, it almost feels like documentary, except for a few...
