DVD Fraggle Rock - Complete First Season
The world of Jim Henson's Fraggle Rock is far from the sunny urban buzz of Sesame Street, where many of Henson's most beloved Muppet characters dwell, or the frantic, backstage shenanigans of The Muppet Show, the classic variety program starring Kermit, Miss Piggy, and other icons of children's television. In Fraggle Rock, humans and Muppets live in different worlds. So different, in fact, that the Fraggles--small but diverse creatures who live in a cavernous land behind a wall in the shop of a tinkerer named Doc (Gerry Parkes)--regard the realm of flesh-and-blood people as "outer space."
Fraggles and people live apart, but the order of things is shaken up when the series' central character, Gobo, can't talk his determined uncle, Traveling Matt, from being the first of his kind to explore the great unknown. Matt leaves Fraggle Rock with a promise to get word to Gobo about how things are going. Thereafter, Gobo has to find a way, from time to time, to fetch postcards from Doc's trash can (Doc can't figure out why missives from someone named Uncle Matt keep turning up in his mailbox) by dashing into the tinkerer's warm workshop, avoiding not only Doc's eyes but the suspicions of his wonderful dog, Sprocket. (Doc mutters occasionally about boarding up a hole in the wall that serves as Gobo's door. When he finally does so, mid-season, it poses a crisis for Gobo, who is caught on the wrong side.) While Traveling Matt sees what people are like, Gobo and his fellow Fraggles--Red, Wembley, Boober, Mokey, and others--have adventures (and some misadventures) of their own, trying to get along, learning to say what they mean and how to avoid making the same mistake twice. Over time, they begin to ponder the big questions of their world and lives, questions that have an ethical subtext that can easily be appreciated by young viewers. Such as: Is it okay to eat elaborate structures built by Doozers, small construction builders whose materials apparently are so tasty? Should one ever trick a friend so seriously the latter actually grieves? Helping the Fraggles with these tough issues is all-knowing Marjory the Trash Heap, guru of garbage and life lessons. Not helpful by any stretch are the problematic Gorgs, giants who want to enslave Fraggles and who consider themselves royalty of the universe (such as it is behind Doc's wall). Each busy episode is designed to impart wisdom to kids, but they are also as funny as one might expect from the wisecracking Muppet Factory. Bonuses include recent interviews with cast and crew of the 1980s show, as well as a documentary about Henson. --Tom Keogh
Review(s): DVD Fraggle Rock - Complete First Season
Solid TV
Dance your cares away...what an intelligent and creative show! Very seldom did it feel the children were being talked down to...the writers put feeling into the various beings who made up Fraggle Rock. Each was not a cartoon but a being who despite their quirks were acceptable as beliveable. My oldest loved it...she is an adult and still has her collection...she would never part with her friends. The lessons they taught were not force fed but were left out there for children to find as they explored the rock. Worries for another day...a shame it went the way of Madame Trashheap...LOL
I felt like I was in my living room when I was 5 years old again ..
I intentionally bought this for my 3 y/o cousin thinking that I would give it to him saying that santa left it for him at our house in California .. One night out of the blue I decided to watch it .. I could not bear to part with this so I bought him another and kept the first copy for myself .. Its amazing that a show like this can be an instant flasback!
All around entertainment for the family
Fraggle Rock is probably Jim Henson's most complete work. This cable TV series from the 1980s spanned several seasons and told the story of a world separate from humans; the world of fraggles. Found behind the wall of Doc's workshop, these puppet creatures sing and dance all day long and have escapades among their own, and among other creatures. The two central characters are Gobo and his uncle Matt. Matt is an explorer and wonders out into the world of man, "Outer Space" for fraggles, and learns about the ways of our world. He relays his observations back as postcards to Gobo. Gobo in turn has his own adventures.
Each episode is 1/2 hour long, and self-contained; though all the episodes stream together. Each episode is filled with music, dancing, singing, and simple and subtle insights into the intricacies of relationships, and how one views the "other"; i.e. how we deal with new individuals and behaviors. Overall, a good series that is entertaining for the whole family. This reviewer bought this multi-disc set at Target for under $30.00, and the package with souvenirs such as notepad with reprints of notes Jim Henson wrote when developing the series.

From the clap-happy theme to the fuzzy creatures, Fraggle Rock is as flat-out fun as children's programming gets. And even a little profound. In second season premiere "Wembley's Egg," for instance, the youngest Fraggle fears his life has no meaning. When an egg lands on Fraggle Rock, he makes like a mother hen and sits on it. The other Fraggles laugh, but he pays them no mind. When a baby bird emerges the next day, Wembley feels his life has meaning after all. Existentialism with Muppets? Sure, why not! The other Fraggles have adventures of their own. In "Boober Rock," the mopey one moves to the Caves of Boredom for a little peace and quiet, but starts to miss his noisy companions. (This episode features a kaleidoscopic Busby Berkeley-style dance sequence.) In "Red's Sea Monster,"... The charm, the zaniness, the corny jokes, the showbiz cliches--every element of The Muppet Show holds up 30 years after Jim Henson's legendary variety series' debut season. Well, perhaps not everything: Today's younger viewers might have a hard time placing some of The Muppet Show's then-guest stars, such as Florence Henderson or Ruth Buzzi. But then, the Show's real celebrities are perennial icons Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo the... whatever, Fozzie Bear, Animal, and the rest of the Muppets' harried, well-meaning family of entertainers. Season One finds the show pretty much in the basic shape longtime fans will remember: A musical introduction followed by backstage chaos, another musical number, a sketch, a scene with the guest star, and so on. I used to watch Fraggle Rock all the time when I was younger. But, as with Muppet Babies, it faded off into the ether. I couldn't understand why people were still really into the show.
Then, I saw this at Wal-Mart (the trial run version, Wal-Mart only). I bought it (being very skeptical), and fell in love with the show all over again. I saw the first 2 episodes for the first time, and that alone reignited my "Fraggle Flame," what I call my love of Fraggle Rock. In fact, I now have a Fraggle Rock poster in my dorm room and everytime I look at the poster, I think of my friends the Fraggles. My wife and I grew up with the Fraggles, and we were very excited to share them with our young daughter when we learned the episodes were coming out on DVD. This is the first collection we picked up, and we have to say we're a bit disappointed.
First, where are the opening theme song and closing credits on each episode!? The title of this collection may entreat you to "Dance Your Cares Away," but you will not be able to dance them away to the song with that line in it. Not only do we NOT get the infectious Fraggle Rock theme song (and its introduction of the main characters for those not familiar with the series!), we don't get the closing credits, which deprives us of the chance to learn who the performers are.
Second, the seemingly random selection of episodes... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Gerard Parkes DVD Release Date: Released the 04 January 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours
