DVD The Wild Geese (30th Anniversary Edition)
Mixing action, humor, sentiment, and even a few righteous moral convictions, The Wild Geese is good, rousing fun. Released theatrically in 1978 (oddly, this 2005 DVD release is referred to as the "30th Anniversary Edition"), director Andrew V. McLaglens film depicts the adventures of a group of British mercenaries hired by a shady multinational corporation to free the benevolent leader of an African nation held captive by a ruthless dictator. Led by the caustic, no-nonsense Col. Allen Faulkner (Richard Burton), these soldiers of fortune are all stout fellows out to earn a big payday and restore a good man to his rightful place of power (the underlying message of universal racial brotherhood is effective, if somewhat simplistic), and they do their job swiftly and efficiently... at least until they're double-crossed by their venal, perfidious employers, at which point the film becomes a tale of survival and revenge. The cast, which also includes Richard Harris, Roger Moore, and a host of other fine veteran actors, is first-rate, the story-telling efficient, the dialogue entertaining (with occasional bursts of profanity), and the action reasonably exciting and not overly graphic. And even if the pace is somewhat leisurely by new millennium standards (we're nearly an hour into it before the actual mission starts), The Wild Geese is a very enjoyable ride. Bonus features include a profile of producer Euan Lloyd and commentary by Lloyd, Moore, and journalist Jonathan Sothcott. --Sam Graham

Holy Cow! Didn't Know it Was Out
I had no idea that this movie was even out on DVD. I just happen to be looking at another movie and it said others who have purchased this item also purchased. Imagine my surprise when I saw this on that list. This is one of my all time favorite action films of all time. When I first saw this movie it introduced me to Richard Burton. I love him in this. I've seen other films he's done. To me he made other good films but nothing compares to this. I saw in another review someone questioned the company who brought out this DVD. Who cares? I'm just happy as all hell that its finally out. I know this is not much of a review. More a happy note that this is finally out. Now I can scratch this off my wish list of movies I want on DVD. Now how about Enter The Ninja?
Great Movie - Low Rate DVD
I watched this movie as a kid and loved it. Had the VHS before and waited for the DVD release. I'm both glad and disappointed now that it's out. Who is Tango DVD? How did they get to release this classic and do a very poor job of it?
The movie is a great Mercenary movie, lots of action, some light-hearted stuff, and great actors in it. Richard Burton, Roger Moore, Richard Harris, and Hardy Kruger. This also has a great story. Not your run of the mill action movie, i.e. bunch of guys go in blow things up and save the day. There's more to it than that. The characters all have backgrounds, there's tension between characters, political issues, etc.
As for the DVD production - it's really really sad that this is the only copy available. What a lousy job of transfering the film. The sound quality though good could've been done better - No 5.1 Dolby. The image quality is poor, it's VHS quality. The aspect ratio is 4:3 Letterbox. Meaning it won't benefit your 16x9 tv set. The transfer is placed on a 4:3 ratio, then the letterbox film placed in the middle with black bars on the top and bottom of the film. So playing it on your widescreen sets, you'll see the movie shrunk in the middle of your screen with bars on ALL SIDES. What a waste. To top it all off, there's no other material included in the DVD case, just the cover. No inserts. It looks like something done by a "pirate" job. I'm not saying this is not a legitimate copy, i'm just saying the quality of it looks otherwise.
This movie deserves a better production quality than this. If you haven't seen the movie, I say rent it, it's worth that much. Owning it though, you'd have to have been a fan of the movie in the 70's to buy it.
I Couldn't Wait to Purchase This Gem.
I really looking forward to this movie coming out on DVD. Now it has, and I must say that I am very pleased with the DVD release of "The Wild Geese." Along with the movie, the viewer will enjoy many extras that come with the DVD. I enjoyed listening to the radio interviews with the cast. It was refreshing to hear the actors' voices recall experiences that they endured while making this movie.
The movie is just as great on DVD as it was on VHS. On the other hand, I was disappointed that the DVD cover art was not the same as the VHS cover art. It is still a great movie to own and cherish.

Cy Endfield co-wrote the epic prequel Zulu Dawn 15 years after his enormously popular Zulu. Set in 1879, this film depicts the catastrophic Battle of Isandhlwana, which remains the worst defeat of the British army by natives, with the British contingent outnumbered 16-to-1 by the Zulu tribesmen. The film's opinion of events is made immediately clear in its title sequence: ebullient African village life presided over by King Cetshwayo is contrasted with aristocratic artifice under the arrogant eye of General Lord Chelmsford (Peter O'Toole). Chelmsford is at the heart of all that goes wrong, initiating the catastrophic battle with an ultimatum made seemingly for the sake of giving his troops something to do. His detached manner leads to one mistake after another, and this is... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Douglas Hickox DVD Release Date: Released the 27 September 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

This restoration of Sam Peckinpah's 1965 western Major Dundee is nothing short of magnificent, a noble attempt at restoring a famously wrecked masterpiece. When Peckinpah went over budget and over schedule during the Mexico shoot, unshot scenes were canceled and the footage rudely cut by the studio. The director disowned the results. In 2005, surviving footage was patched back in, and a new musical soundtrack commissioned to replace the score Peckinpah hated. This raises some legitimate questions about interpreting a director's intentions, and about messing with film history, but Major Dundee--The Extended Version is such a rousing, mysterious experience, one feels grateful.

Back before Christopher Walken became a caricature of himself, when he was still considered a rising actor based on his Oscar® for The Deer Hunter, he made this graphic, exciting action film, about a group of professional mercenaries. Walken leads a band of soldiers of fortune, who are hired to overthrow a dictator in West Africa (think Idi Amin). But when their mission is compromised by political and monetary forces, Walken returns to the United States, disillusioned, battered, and not sure the high life of lawyers, guns, and money is really for him. Still, vengeance is sweet, as his partner, Tom Berenger, keeps whispering into his ear. A better film than it's generally given credit for, The Dogs of War features the kind of cool, detached performance Walken used to be... Nineteen thirty-nine is often proposed as the movies' halcyon year, and three reasons why were directed by John Ford: Stagecoach, Young Mr. Lincoln, and Drums Along the Mohawk. In that exalted company Drums... would have to be accounted "merely superb"--even if it's the best film ever made about the American Revolution and, oh, only about eighth-best picture of its year.
Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert play newlyweds in New York's Mohawk Valley at the time of the Revolutionary War. That war is more a distant rumor than a direct concern of people with cabins to raise, crops to harvest, and firstborn on the way. When it comes to their valley, in the form of hitherto-peaceable Indians whipped up by a gaunt Tory with an eyepatch (John Carradine), life changes...
