  • DVD Dave Chappelle - For What It's Worth

Dave Chappelle-For What It's Worth finds the Comedy Central superstar in performance at San Francisco's legendary Winterland, where he's welcomed with a huge ovation. Easing into his set, Chappelle shares a few observations about the city itself, noting there's nothing tender about the Tenderloin District: "You've got people smoking crack while sitting in front of Starbucks." Chappelle's inspiration dips a bit after that, as the subject of sex with monkeys and smoking weed with Indians doesn't quite reach his usual standards. Then, suddenly, he's on top of his game again, his material like an echo of vintage Lenny Bruce as he discusses why whites drink grape juice and blacks drink "grape drink," why police harassment has led him to believe in impromptu alibis, and why the culture of celebrity should stay away from real-world issues: "Maybe Jah Rule doesn't have the answers we want in a disaster." --Tom Keogh

Review(s): DVD Dave Chappelle - For What It's Worth
    Great social commentary

I loved this stand-up routine. I actually got the chance to see this routine live in Atlantic City before it was on TV. I couldn't wait for the DVD to be released.

While some of the bits in the routine were a little longer than they need to (i.e. the sex with monkeys bit), his bits that are a social commentary more than make up for it.

His bit on "How old is 15?" is simply brilliant.

Dave back to doing what he does best: standup

With the demise of Comedy Central's smash hit Chappelle's Show, comedian Dave Chappelle returns to what made him a comedy star: standup. For What It's Worth finds Chappelle in San Francisco for this hour long comedy special, where he lets his feelings on certain subjects be known. Chappelle covers the allegations against Michael Jackson, why every black man must have an alibi, smoking marijuana with American Indians, black celebrities, and of course, sex with monkeys. The material isn't the best we've heard from him (in fact there is a bit of a stretch between some laugh out loud moments), but he is at his best when satirizing race differences, and later on when he discusses the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping case and how she could have handled things differently compared to a little heard kidnapping case around the same time involving a young, black girl in Philadelphia. All in all, For What It's Worth is full of some great comedic moments in a triumphant return to standup comedy for Chappelle, and fans will definitely want to check this out, but the DVD itself is a rip off at it's list price because there's hardly any Special Features here at all.

    Comedy at its funniest

If you like Dave Chappelle even the slightest you'll love him live at the Fillmore. Dave does it again with his over the top antics. This is a worth while purchase that will keep you laughing again and again.

    Chappelle's Show - Season 2 DVD

Dave Chappelle's shrewd parodies, stinging satires, and boldly imaginative fantasias simply pour from the second season of his Comedy Central show, in every respect as funny as his well-received debut year. The structure is the same: a relaxed Chappelle introduces each sketch to an enthusiastic, studio audience (some of these introductions amount to stand-up routines), and then the madness begins. Among the many highlights from the 13 episodes on this boxed set's three discs is a mock ad for Samuel L. Jackson beer, featuring Chappelle's hilarious impression of Jackson's stern, overbearing persona from Pulp Fiction, and a dozen other features. Chappelle, considering a career in politics, floats a couple of trial campaign commercials, including one that promises to solve America's... More Info about this DVD

Platinum Comedy Series - Dave Chappelle - Killin' Them Softly DVD

Killin' Them Softly is easily one of HBO's best comedy specials, catching star Dave Chappelle at a career high in 2000 and with an abundance of hysterical, highly polished material. Taking his time, stretching concepts and bits like a master, Chappelle plunges into a wealth of anecdotes and observations about the influx of white people into Washington, D.C. (where this show was recorded) since the 1980s. ("Who are the scariest people? White guys in black gangs. No telling what they did to get respect.") There are fantastic tales of racing cops with Chappelle's white friend, Chip, and a great story about being left alone in a limousine outside a busy crack house. Other good stuff: introducing a kid to a PePe Le Pew cartoon and realizing too late the skunk is a sex criminal, and why... More Info about this DVD

    Chappelle's Show - Season 1 DVD

The 2003 debut of Chappelle's Show on Comedy Central marked a high point for the cable channel, and now the entire, wildly creative first season can be seen, with hundreds of bleeps removed. That's not to say Chappelle's Show is perfect entertainment: there are too many moments among the 12 episodes here that descend into pointless scatology and booty fever. But for the most part, Chappelle, a talented comic slowly growing into greatness, is trying to push the sketch-humor envelope and succeeds at surprising us with original concepts and merciless execution.

The merely clever material includes "National Geography's Third World Girls Gone Wild," basically an update on those topless-native-women gags of yore, and Chappelle's "Educated Guess Line," in which the sage comic... More Info about this DVD

This movie is a really cool look into the science of being funny. All wannabe comedians should see this. Plus you get to see what it's like for two new comics trying to make. This film is funny, super amusing and really hooks you. I liked it a lot and you will too. More Info about this DVD

Half Baked Fully Baked Widescreen Edition DVD

Cannabis comedy doesn't get more juvenile than this pro-pot goof about three stoners who come to the rescue of a fourth buddy when he's arrested for feeding a lethal dose of junk food to a diabetic police horse. Kenny (Harland Williams) is sent to jail, and to rescue him from the almost inevitable trauma of homosexual rape (giving you some idea of this movie's level of humor), his buddies set out to raise his $100,000 bail by selling high-grade weed ripped off from a pharmaceutical research lab. That's about it for the plot; the rest of the movie's a parade of marijuana jokes and amusing pot-friendly cameos by the likes of Snoop Dog, Willie Nelson, and Janeane Garofalo. As two of the bong-hitting buddies, Jim Breuer (from Saturday Night Live) and comedian Dave Chappelle do their... More Info about this DVD
