Before his death, comedian Chris Farley made a pair of surprisingly successful comedies that teamed him with Saturday Night Live colleague David Spade. Their relationship in each film was pretty much the same, but then so was Abbott and Costello's or Laurel and Hardy's (not that Farley and Spade are in their league). In Tommy Boy, Farley plays the ne'er-do-well son of a successful auto parts manufacturer (Brian Dennehy). When Dad drops dead just after marrying a young new wife, it's up to Tommy (aided by sarcastic bean-counter Spade) to rescue the company by taking over for his father. Black Sheep features a slightly different plot: This time, Spade is hired by Farley's brother (Tim Matheson), a candidate for governor, to keep Farley (an accident-prone buffoon) out of sight until after the election. Farley has a likable quality that is exploited by continuous slapstick centered on his clumsiness, both physically and socially. --Marshall Fine

Yes, I Know It's Silly, But It's Funny As Hell Too!

This is a funny film. When I first saw this film years ago I laughed pretty hard. The pairing of Chris Farley, and David Spade was the best pairing of these two in an comedy the two of them were ever in. [In my opinion] In the very beginning of the film you can see that even after all those years of schooling, Tommy (Chris Farley) is not too bright. But, it's the character of Richard (David Spade) that had me laughing first. When Tommy arrives home from school saying that a lot of people go to college for seven years, and Richard retorts with, "Yeah, I know, there called Doctors," this had me in stitches. David Spade portrays the role of a snide and irritating accountant to the hilt.

When Tommy's new found family [an addition due to his father's marriage] arrives at the house, I thought that Rob Lowe as the step-brother was hilarious. Everything Lowe does backfires on him. But the greatest part of the film is the road trip to hell that Richard and Tommy are about to embark on, now that the father is dead. And what a funny road trip the two of them take. From the deer in the car, to the hits on Tommy's head by Richard, the film is silly and yet not silly enough to be stupid, but funny comedy instead. This film is highly recommended. There are plenty of laughs throughout.

The best comedy duo of all time.

I have seen alot of great comedy movies, and I was blown away by how great David Spade and Chris Farley were together. I thought this was going to be an okay movie but I found out that it was a great movie. One of the best comedies of all time. I loved how they always had David Spade there to make an inteligence, or a fat joke. This is a great movie that everyone should see. I have to say I was laughing throughout the whole movie. It really is a shame that Chris Farley did drugs, other wise he could still be here today.

    "BLACK SHEEP'S" Evil Twin...

Although "Black Sheep" is a funnier movie, in that it has more vintage Farley/Spade humor, this film has a better-written story-line, at least I think so. But the two films are VERY similar, in premise and script. The Farley-Spade chemistry is evident throughout; Spade's dark, caustic wit, played off of Farley's over-the-top performance, is a non-stop journey through a story which, although a little hard to believe in spots, is a little uplifting. The sadness over the death of the father (Brian Dennehy) gives the story a serious tone, and Farley's character, sitting in his sailboat, talking to the wind, telling his father how much he'll be missed, shows him as a sensitive, albeit immature, man who really loved his father, and wants to make him proud.

Jokes from Farley about Spade, and vice versa, are first-rate, but the two funniest moments in the film are probably when Farley's character is trying to sell a business owner some brake pads, and re-enacts a car accident with model cars from the business owner's desk. He's trying to show him what could happen with "the other guy's brake pads." This is classic, vintage Farley, and a far more subtle moment, but really hilarious, would be after Spade's and Farley's character actually have a physical confrontation. Richard (Spade) finally crashes a plank of wood across Tommy's (Farley's) face, knocking him unconscious. The next scene has them sitting in a restaurant, staring at one another, not speaking, and the soundtrack is playing "...I'm sorry, so sorry..." That is the trick to enjoying any good movie; paying close attention to the quieter moments. They always have more content than the more visible, noisy parts. Often, something important is lost on an audience, because in a slower, less involved scene, that's when someone has to go to the bathroom, or get something to drink. This has ruined the enjoyment of many a movie, in the theater, as well as the home, for me, at least, and I am sure I speak for lots of movie fans by saying this. Get your stuff, and pee BEFORE the movie begins!

But, in all, Tommy Boy is one of those comedies that will leave you laughing long after the movie ends.

    Black Sheep DVD

Chris Farley plays the disaster-prone brother of a gubernatorial candidate in Washington State. Though he is well meaning, the havoc he creates on the campaign trail is drawing press attention, so a snotty aide (David Spade) to the politician is dispatched to keep the big lug under control. Spade's character initially insults his charge as often as possible, but over time, the two bond and end up becoming a part of the final election push. Farley and Spade have some very funny moments, but overall the film feels rushed and poorly planned. Constant changes in character and script happen recklessly and randomly so that nothing ever really makes sense; the film keeps changing the rules by which it plays. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD

Dumb and Dumber (Unrated Edition) DVD

Delivering exactly what its title promises, this celebration of stupidity was Jim Carrey's 1994 follow-up to Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask. The film pairs the rubber- faced wacky man with Jeff Daniels as the not-so-dynamic duo of Lloyd and Harry, dunderheads who come into the possession of a briefcase containing ransom money that is intended for Mob-connected kidnappers. Lauren Holly costars as the woman who lost the briefcase, and with whom Carrey falls in love (both in real life and as his moronic on-screen character). As Lloyd and Harry make a mad dash to return the briefcase (never aware of its contents), the bumbling buddies attract Mobsters, cops, and trouble galore. This lowbrow laugh-a-thon scores some solid hits for hilarity, but with gags involving... More Info about this DVD

    Almost Heroes DVD

Perhaps this is low brow moviemaking at its finest. Just picture a film about Lewis and Clark type explorers with lots of brainless juvenille humour and with a fun, adventurous spirit. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but if you can watch it in the right frame of mind you'll really laugh at some genuinely memorable scenes. Beverly Hills Ninja DVD

A slapstick comedy starring Chris Farley, Beverly Hills Ninja is part prop-gag movie and part testament to the late comedian's physical comedic abilities. As a baby, Haru (Farley) appeared on the coastal shores of Japan. Legend has it that a foreigner would arrive and become the greatest ninja ever, known as the "Great White Ninja." As Haru grew, it became apparent: he was not the one. But when a beautiful stranger named Sally (Nicollette Sheridan) appears at the dojo seeking a ninja's help, Haru finds his calling. Through a series of mix-ups (generally caused by Haru himself), Haru is framed for murder and he follows Sally to Beverly Hills to set things right. Finding out Sally's boyfriend is a counterfeiter and murderer, Haru with the help of hotel bellboy Joey (Chris Rock) and... More Info about this DVD

Wedding Crashers - Uncorked (Unrated Widescreen Edition) DVD

With Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as a pair of brazen wedding crashers, this buddy/romantic comedy milks a few big laughs from its foolproof premise. Under the direction of David Dobkin (who previously worked with Wilson on Shanghai Knights), the movie ranges from bawdy romp to mushy romance, and that tonal identity crisis curtails the overall hilarity. But when the well-teamed costars are firing on all pistons with fast-paced dialogue and manic situations, belly laughs are delivered at a steady clip. Things get complicated when the guys infiltrate the family of the Treasury Secretary (Christopher Walken), resulting in a romantic pair-off between Vaughn and the congressman's oversexed daughter Gloria (Isla Fisher) while Wilson sincerely woos another daughter, Claire (Rachel...
