  • DVD Harry and Tonto

In 1974, the Oscar nominees for Best Actor included Jack Nicholson (Chinatown), Al Pacino (Godfather Part II), and Dustin Hoffman (Lenny). And the winner? Art Carney for this Paul Mazursky comedy about a retired schoolteacher evicted from his apartment to make way for urban redevelopment. So he takes his cat, Tonto, and heads cross-country to live with one of his children. But the trip is an eventful one, involving encounters with an assortment of friends and strangers. Carney is a game and canny old pro and he helps this film rise above its occasionally sentimental excesses; the result is consistently entertaining. But honestly--the Oscar over Nicholson, Pacino, and Hoffman? You be the judge. --Marshall Fine

    Poignant Story

Harry and Tonto isn't just about an old man and his pet cat. It's a story of his estranged family, it's a story of redemption, it's a story about how to deal with change. In short, it's a story everyone can identify with. It's funny without being absurd, even though the film is peopled with odd characters throughout. You'll like and respect Harry as the movie progresses, and he'll teach you the meaning of resilience by the end of the movie. Art Carney does a great job, and the cast has some other terrific performances. While this film doesn't fall into the "Must See" category, it's a moving story and I recommend it.

    Harry's Turn

This 1974 jewel addressed the deepening loneliness of elders in our country and the role animals and other strangers play in sustaining them through loss and displacement.

Harry & Tonto -- like John Steinbeck and Charley -- embarking on their final journey to discover America, and while these characters prefer to share their deepest insights with four-legged creatures, it's the humanity of Mazursky's characters that make this movie shimmer. The film revels in the eccentricities of our fellow-humans and the ways in which their quirks enrich our lives.

There are few, if any, weak links to the cast. The performances of veteran director, Herbert Berghof, Ellen Burstyn, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Josh Mostel and Chief Dan George are dead, solid perfect.

Carney delivers an understated performance that captured the 1974 Oscar for Best Actor. In the final moments of the film, Harry --aat the end of his journey -- sees a vision of the past on a California beach.

At the instant he stops running, completely winded, and accedes to life as it is, he triggers a catharsis I found unforgettable.

Eye-catching cinematography, a durable, moving score by Bill Conti and thoughtful art direction enhance the trip futher.

A lovely film, capably remastered, and a steal at this price.

I copied VHS tape on dvd for my own use but...

I would gladly purchase a clean sharp copy that will last on a legit DVD. Some background on the film would be nice also such as biographies, where it was filmed etc)any deleted scenes if they still exsist. But it would be great to see a crisp copy with improved sound, most of all.

    The Trip to Bountiful DVD

I was so happy to hear Bountiful was FINALLY on dvd. I had waited so long.

It is without a doubt one of my top 5 Favorite Movies. Ms Page is absolutely outstanding as Carrie Watts. The oscar she received for the role was well deserved. Like a review before said, Ms Page had nuances of a southern lady down pat. I could have sworn that she was my grandmother, right down to the hymn singing. I do wish some of the other cast had won for supporting actors. All played their parts so well.

Now my reasons for liking this movies so much is:

    1. A movie about Southerners in which Southeners are cast in a positive manner, not as a bunch of racist and rednecks.
    2. The acting and script is simply outstanding.
    3. A story that just about everyone can... More Info about this DVD

    Night Moves DVD

This vastly underrated Arthur Penn film from the mid-1970s ranks as one of the era's nastiest and most fascinating pieces of business, a detective story that shuttles back and forth between Hollywood and the Florida Keys, with a plot nearly as complex as Chinatown. Gene Hackman stars as a tired, aging private eye who, as a favor to a friend, agrees to track down a runaway teen. But the case turns out to be something much larger: a smuggling ring of Mayan antiquities. The human impulses get darker and darker and Hackman's character gets pulled in deeper and deeper, even as his own life is falling apart. Ultimately, in one of his best and most unsung performances, Hackman winds up hurting the people he is trying to help. A great cast includes Susan Clark, Jennifer Warren, a young... Lifeboat (Special Edition) DVD

Part mystery, part wartime polemic, Lifeboat finds director Alfred Hitchcock tackling a cinematic challenge that foreshadows the self-imposed handicaps of Rope and Rear Window. As with those subsequent features, Hitchcock confines his action and characters to a single set, in this instance the lone surviving lifeboat from an Allied freighter sunk by a German U-boat in the North Atlantic. A less confident, ingenious filmmaker might have opened up John Steinbeck's dialogue-driven character study beyond the battered boat and its cargo of survivors, but Hitchcock instead revels in his predicament to exploit the enforced intimacy between his characters.

Indeed, we never actually see the doomed freighter--the smoking ship's funnel beneath the credits simply sinks beneath... More Info about this DVD

    Laura DVD

This silky smooth film noir pits gruff police detective Dana Andrews, stiff and blunt in his street-bred manners, against a cultured columnist and acidic wit (Clifton Webb at his prissiest) in a battle of wits during a murder investigation. The cop is a romantic hiding under a hard-boiled exterior who falls in love with the beautiful victim through the portrait that hangs in her apartment. Gene Tierney, whose heart-shaped face mixes the exotic with the girl next door, brings the poise and calm of a model to her role as the object of every man's gaze and the target of a killer. Laura, handsomely shot in dreamy black and white, is the first and best of Otto Preminger's cool, controlled murder mysteries. In the gritty world of film noir it remains the most refined and elegant example... More Info about this DVD
