  • DVD The Pretender - The Complete Second Season

According to his sleek nemesis Miss Parker (Andrea Parker), Jarod (Michael T. Weiss) is "a genius who can become anyone that he wants to be." As the second season begins, he's still on the run and her father, Mr. Parker (Harve Presnell, Fargo), is still missing. In his place, the Centre has installed the smooth Mr. Lyle (Jamie Denton, Desperate Housewives) and his associate Brigitte (Pamela Gidley, whose British accent will soon disappear). In the premiere episode ("Back From the Dead Again"), it will also be revealed that Mr. Raines (Richard Marcus, 24) survived last season's assassination attempt. A few episodes later ("Exposed"), Mr. Parker will return, but by then Miss Parker won't be so sure he's really her father. Then again, nothing on The Pretender is ever what it seems...

Throughout the 22-episode season, Jarod’s "pretends" will range from firefighter ("Over the Edge") to FBI Agent ("A Stand Up Guy")--even male escort ("Gigolo Jarod"). Along the way, he'll catch up on some of the childhood staples he missed, like Jell-O and Twinkies (both of which he'll use against the bad guys). Meanwhile, Sydney (Patrick Bauchau) will reunite with his twin brother, only to lose him again ("Indy Show," featuring a cameo from Mario Andretti). Other pivotal episodes include "Bulletproof," in which Sydney meets up with another figure from his past, "Crash," in which Mr. Lyle's true identity is revealed, and double-length season finale "Bloodlines" (featuring Haley Joel Osment as a potential pretender), in which Miss Parker finds out she has a brother. Alas, it's either the psychotic Mr. Lyle or Angelo (Paul Dillon), the Centre's idiot savant or, as she calls him, "Cousin It." The second season ends with a cliffhanger as a bomb goes off in the Centre--just as Jarod is trying to make his escape. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Review(s): DVD The Pretender - The Complete Second Season
One of the most underated shows ever!

This show kept a perfect balance of suspense and "feel good" feelings. Without a doubt, worth picking up. The per episode price is cheap and the show has tons rewatching value. A must buy.

    Andrea Parker Steals the Show!!

In Season 1 of "The Pretender" we learned what "The Center" and all it's good guys and bad guys did and said. The backgrounds of Jarod, Miss. Parker and Sydney were lightly touched upon and the epsisodes made for interesting viewing. In Season 2, we have MUCH, MUCH MORE!! There is a spirited team effort here and all the characters, especially the multi-faceted and talented Andrea Parker as "Miss. Parker," show their human sides more broadly than in S1, and in doing so touch the viewer in a big way. I have watched half of the season already and my favorite episode so far involves Broots handing his daughter off to Miss. Parker to babysit her. In under an hour, Parker shows a range of emotions, solid acting, and at the end, a vulnerability that just tore at my heart strings. When she gives Broots daughter the book "Little Women" (a gift left to Parker by her own dead Mother) and says, "I want you to read ever bit of this," you know there exists a big heart and a sad and lonely woman within the hard, businesslike exterior of Miss. Parker.

Jarod (played efficiently by Michael T. Weiss who is talented and displays much emotion with his eyes although tending to overact at times..) discovers twinkies ("food of the gods"), "magic" eight balls, plastic surgery, race car driving, and other fun stuff, figthing for those who have had injustice brought against them. There are also clues to where his parents are as the season unfolds and continues. John Cries is great as the bumbling but loveable Broots and the actor (can't think of his name) who plays Sydney is riveting and I love hearing him speak. The episode where he plays his dying twin brother Jacob is a real WINNER and also very moving.

The only weak link is James (Jamie here!) Denton who is devious but somewhat likeable on "Desperate Housewives." In "Pretender" as the mysterious "Mr. Lyle" I'm still not sure what he adds to the show and he really doesn't look like a bad guy to me. Other than that, I find this season better than Season 1 and I really hope they release 3 and 4 as well as the Pretender movies. Great escapism, acting and truly imaginative. I still can't believe Andrea Parker never won or was nominated for an Emmy...she really is an underrated actress.

    ENJOY!

I used to love this show.

I used to always watch this show. I loved it, and I loved Jarod. It was always entertaining and while each episode mainly stood on its own, there was the mystery behind Jarod's past that made me keep watching. I'd say now that it's a little dated, but if you've never seen this before or even if you have, it is still enjoyable and well written. Now everyone will know James Denton (Jamie Denton then) from Desperate Housewives. He was a hot looking bad guy, and Miss Parker is now in Less Than Perfect. It's a good cast (with not always great acting) but you'll enjoy it if you like a bit of mystery.

Stargate SG-1 - Season 8 Boxed Set DVD

I have read a lot of negetive reviews about the shorter version of the episode "Threads" being on this set rather than the longer more boring version. I just picked up the set and have only watched the episode "Threads" (I watched the season when it aired). I thought the shorter version was better and quicker to get to the point, there was a lot of padding in the longer version. Although I don't agree with MGM's Decision to not to put the broadcast version on the DVD, I'm glad they didn't. I don't think I will trade in my set to get the longer version. MacGyver - The Complete Third Season DVD

In "Ghost Ship," MacGyver's boss, Pete (Dana Elcar), is asked to define what makes Mac (Richard Dean Anderson) so special. He replies, "You know, I've known him for eight years now, and I've never quite been able to put my finger on it. He just always comes through, no matter what." And that he does. MacGyver's third season begins with a blast from the past when Mac runs into Lisa (Elyssa Davalos), a woman he thought he had killed (unintentionally, of course). Turns out Lisa's just fine, but she did do a little time in a Russian gulag, proceeding to marry the ex-KGB operative who set her free. The two-part season opener ("Lost Love") allows Mac to make it up to his former flame with a little help from pal Jack (Bruce "D-Day" McGill), AKA "The Great Sheldrake," whose latest career... MacGyver - The Complete Second Season DVD

MacGyver's second season begins by following the same blueprint as the first (although the opening gambit is gone). Richard Dean Anderson is back as the eponymous secret agent. So is Pete Thornton (Dana Elcar), operations director of the Phoenix Foundation. In addition, Mac's ditzy pal, Penny (Teri Hatcher), and beloved grandfather, Harry (John Anderson), return for a few episodes. In the season premiere ("The Human Factor"), a skeptical military man says to Thornton, "So this is your main guy. He doesn't even have any gear." Responds Thornton, "That's what makes him so special." As before, Mac doesn't drink, smoke, or carry a firearm. He puts it plainly in the fourth episode ("The Wish Child"): "I hate guns." Mac would rather use non-violent means, i.e. "MacGyverisms," to fight... More Info about this DVD

MacGyver - The Complete First Season DVD

Like James Bond--but without the high-tech gadgets--Angus MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson) is one of those rare beings who can avert any crisis without mussing a hair. (The rest of us should be so lucky.) In the pilot alone, the secret agent dismantles a missile using a paper clip and fashions a rocket thruster out of a pistol. Is there anything MacGyver can't do? As the first season of ABC's long-running adventure series proves, the answer is a resounding no. MacGyver's secret: the everyday items he "finds along the way," like matches or gum wrappers, and the ingenuity to put them to a myriad of uses (a background in physics and chemistry doesn't hurt). Unlike Alias' Sidney Bristow, he isn't a multi-linguist, a martial artist, or a master of disguises. Wits are MacGyver's weapon... More Info about this DVD
