DVD Cheers - The Complete Sixth Season
In its sixth season, Cheers introduced its second major--and most significant--cast change. Following the events of season 5, Sam (Ted Danson) returns from his aborted around-the-world boat trip to find the old gang gone, Carla (Rhea Perlman) and Woody (Woody Harrelson) wearing uniforms more fit for a barbershop quartet, and a tough new boss who reportedly "eats live sharks for breakfast." The new boss, Rebecca (Kirstie Alley, probably best known at the time for her appearance in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and later to anchor such series as Veronica's Closet and Fat Actress), grudgingly hires back Sam, but has him positively befuddled with her resistance to his masculine wiles. She's not as tough as she seems, however, getting weak in the knees at the thought or sight of her corporate boss, Evan Drake (Tom Skerritt).
After the Diane debacle, the irony of the sixth season is that wedding bells are in the air. Carla is on the verge of hitching up with her Boston Bruins boyfried, Eddie LeBec (Jay Thomas), until a string of bad luck threatens to tear apart the "two most superstitious people in the world." Then Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) is the victim of a prank that turns serious when he decides to dump live-in psychologist-lover Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) in order to "pursue the fair Rebecca." Other events of the season include Sam as a rapping sportscaster, Sam and Woody being sold in a charity auction, Woody entering a romance with an older woman while dressed up as Mark Twain, and another showdown with Gary's Old Town Tavern. Cheers missed Shelley Long, but it remained a high-quality show; her career missed Cheers infinitely more. --David Horiuchi
A must have since it's Rebecca's first season and she's still smart and gorgeous (unlike later seasons when they make her stupid and the show jumps the shark). I am continually blown away by the amount of footage that I've never seen before since it gets cut (liberally) in the syndicated versions.
good, however, would prefer "non- theme song" option
I would like the option of "play all" without having to hear the theme song every time and without the credits. Also do not like the adverts. Beyond that it's good
What's happening to Sam?
Well, I admit I'm biased towards the Diane years. I never quite enjoyed the Rebecca episodes as much back in the 80's and I fully expected to not like them as much now. Thing is, Rebecca isn't bad this season, comedy-wise. The problem is that the warmth and heart seems to have gone out of the show. In the Diane years, the characters cared about each other. Now, they just crack one-liners. Plus, what's happening to Sammy?? How can Sam Malone be losing it? I hate that; Sam's the ultimate womanizer. If he's losing his touch... well, I don't think that's a world I want to live in! In short, some very funny moments, but it's just not the same show.
Whats wrong with you people?!!Cheers is a brilliant show, excellently written and acted, yet it can't even get in the top 100 on the amazon.com Top Sellers TV list? What the heck? I mean some shows that made the list are awful, and some I never heard of. Cheers won more Emmys than any other show ever except two. Its the longest running sitcom of all time tied with Cheers spinoff Frasier and M*A*S*H. Its finale episode is still ranked second all time for a series finale, only behind M*A*S*H. I see stuff that doesn't come out until like December ahead on the Top Sellers list. Cheers The Complete Seventh season is phenominal! Cliffs girlfriend Margaret makes her first appearence and is hilarious. A fantastic season. So why isn't a best seller? Very curious. I don't get it. I'm very... Luckily through one of my friends who had the first season and had nothing to do I decided to give it a chance and it was great. I Became fan of Frasier and hooked. Frasier's fifth season is marked by two central themes. First is Roz's (Peri Gilpin) unexpected pregnancy, which naturally opens the door for countless promiscuity jokes for the radio show's beleaguered producer. The second is the continuing drama of Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and his frosty wife, Maris, which seemed to finally come to a head. Not that even a good marriage has ever kept Niles from pining for Daphne (Jane Leeves), of course. Frasier's (Kelsey Grammer) show is sailing along, and for the occasion of his 1000th show, is honored by the mayor for "Frasier Crane Day," which allows the cast to do some rare location shooting in Seattle. But he has some problems with KACL management, and the prospect of tough contract negotiations tempts him to return to the Dark Side,... Frasier's fourth season was mostly about relationships. Niles (David Hyde Pierce), now separated from Maris, is back on the market like his bachelor brother, Frasier (Kelsey Grammer). That's great when the pair goes to a cabin with a pair of fetching women (Megan Mullaly, later of Will and Grace, and Lisa Darr), but Niles is never able to completely dispel his attachment to his suffocating wife... or to Daphne (Jane Leeves). His obsession with the latter gets an immediate burst in the season's first episode, in which he has to masquerade as Daphne's husband, then later comes to a head when she appears at his apartment door asking to stay the night. The boys have the usual disputes with their father (John Mahoney), including their disdain for the former cop's new... From the melancholy opening notes of the theme song, Taxi promised to be a different kind of sitcom, epitomized by the show's central character, Alex Reiger (Judd Hirsch, Ordinary People): down to earth and compassionate, with neuroses that smacked of real life and not the forced zaniness of too many television shows. Alex was the conscience and emotional caretaker of a makeshift family of cab drivers working out of a grungy garage in New York City, run by the domineering Louis De Palma (Danny DeVito, who would go on to be a bigger star than the rest of the cast in movies like Get Shorty and Batman Returns). Taxi didn't always maintain a degree of realism--if you haven't seen it in a long time, you may be surprised by some of the cornier jokes and bits...
