DVD Santa Claus - The Movie (20th Anniversary Edition)
The producers of the Superman movies took a shot at revitalizing the myth of Santa Claus with this 1985 feature. Unfortunately, the results were much less compelling than the flagship Superman feature, despite a script by one of the latter's key writers (David Newman) and a story structure that is essentially a carbon copy of the Man of Steel's movie. The first half of Santa Claus: The Movie is a ponderous origins tale, in which we learn that Santa was actually a woodcutter saved from certain death by elves and taken to the North Pole to begin life as the chimney-dropping hero of children everywhere. The second half involves a world-class villain (John Lithgow) who recruits an outcast elf (Dudley Moore) in a scheme to sabotage old St. Nick. While it aims to become a Christmas classic in the hearts and minds of generations to come, the film never really engages an audience, partially because Santa himself is merely a supporting player in the drama. Jeannot Szwarc (Supergirl, Jaws II) directs with a disabling lack of vision, and the special effects are terrible for such an expensive production. Sorry, but it's coals in the stocking for this flick. --Tom Keogh
Review(s): DVD Santa Claus - The Movie (20th Anniversary Edition)
A timeless classic movie for young and old!
I remember watching this movie when I was young and I spent a while looking for it on DVD. As soon as I saw the 20th Anniversary Edition released, I grabbed it!! I may be a little biased because Christmas is my favorite season, but I guarantee this could be a holiday favorite for anyone.
Please God, Make it Stop
In the history of bad movies, this one sets new standards. In the middle of the movie I remember thinking, "Please God, Make it Stop." The actor who plays Joe evokes a visceral response in the viewer bordering on homicidal rage. Better casting could have been done by simply picking random people in Central Park. The only redeeming acting is done by John Lithgow who is so evil on screen, that he is actually endearing. There should have been more of him and less of everyone else. I did survive this movie, but it has left an indelible scar on my soul. Please God, end my agony -- stop the movie or just kill me.
Pure Christmas magic!
If you wish to embark upon a journey of pure Christmas magic, please DON'T believe a word of the few negative reviews of this movie posted here. Instead, BELIEVE in the plethora of glowingly positive reviews here, and rush to order this DVD (preferably the wide-screen version if you can find it)! This movie is a sheer joy and a true classic for the whole family! I discovered this film as a 36-year-old, when my beloved mom and I watched it on TV together a few years after it came out. We both adored it from the start!
Everyone in the family will delight in the first 45 minutes of the film, which re-tell the legend of St. Nicholas and how Santa Claus came to be. David Huddleston and Judy Cornwell, the actors who play Santa and Mrs. Claus, respectively, are the total embodiment of the warm, wonderful Santa and Mrs. Claus of my heart and imagination! The depictions of the far-away, wintry North Pole--the elves with their various personalities, the amazing toy factory, the magical flying reindeer, and everything else--are the stuff of my eternal-inner-child dreams!
The film then moves from the times of legend to the present. Two subplots that eventually intertwine constitute the rest of the film: a rather touching story involving a starving, homeless boy and the well-to-do little girl who helps and befriends him, and the other subplot, involving a renegade elf (played by Dudley Moore) and a comically villainous toy mogul (played by John Lithgow), who wants to exploit him. While all is told in a way that youngsters will find truly entertaining, older children and adults will also find meaningful (but not preachy) observations on everything from the crass commercialism that has seemingly overwhelmed Christmas (at least in the U.S.A.), to the decline of workmanship and quality, to the true meaning of charity, compassion, and kindness--and yes, even forgiveness.
In short, it's a winner, and I predict you and yours will enjoy this movie together as a family tradition-of-the-season for years and years to come!

Grab an econo-pack of tissues, gather your loved ones around a cozy television, and bring on the hot cocoa--it's time for a dose of Christmas spirit. The tender and charming Mary Steenburgen (Parenthood) dons a sour disposition in her role as Ginny Grainger, a woman who finds little joy in life lately--let alone in the impending holiday season. Ginny cannot even bring herself to say, "Merry Christmas," despite her family's enthusiasm about the big day. With help from Ginny's brave and loving daughter (sweetly performed by Elisabeth Harnois) and a Christmas angel named Gideon (Harry Dean Stanton), Ginny undergoes a life-altering... The original 1947 version of this Valentine Davies story follows the misadventures of Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) as he gets a job playing Santa Claus at Macy's department store in New York City. A Christmas Story is on its way to becoming an annual holiday classic, one to keep on the shelf with It's a Wonderful Life, the puppet-animated Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and A Charlie Brown Christmas. It may have been directed by Bob Clark (responsible for the Porky's pictures), but it's based on the childhood memoirs of humorist Jean Shepherd (from his hilarious book In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash). And it is Shepherd's wry, deadly accurate and gently nostalgic comic sensibility that shines through in this kid's-eye-view of an all-American Christmas in the 1940s. All little Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) wants under the tree on Christmas morning is a Daisy Brand Red-Ryder BB rifle. He not only wants it, he's consumed with an aching... Most critics couldn't get behind Bill Murray's modern retelling of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, finding it too unfocused at times and not nearly wicked enough. Still, if you're a Murray fan, you have to enjoy his deliciously nasty portrayal of the world's meanest TV executive, who has his cathartic moment one cold Christmas night in New York City. The various ghosts lead him on a ghost-town tour of Manhattan, with stops at holidays past, present, and future and a Kumbaya moment when Al Green and Annie Lennox sing "Put a Little Love in Your Heart." The effects are otherworldly, but one wishes the writing were as sharp as Murray's edgy portrayal. --Marshall FineMore Info about this DVD Director(s): Richard Donner DVD Release Date: Released the 09 November 1999 Usually ships in 24 hours
