  • DVD Veronica Mars - The Complete First Season

The smartest high school drama since Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Veronica Mars is The O.C. as penned by Raymond Chandler. Veronica (Kristen Bell, Deadwood) is Nancy Drew by way of Lauren Bacall, while Neptune makes Peyton Place look like Mayberry. The first season begins in the aftermath of a dizzying array of cataclysmic events: Her best friend, Lilly (Amanda Seyfried), was murdered, her sheriff father was fired over his handling of the case, she was sexually assaulted, and her mother left. Since then, Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni, Just Shoot Me) has become a private eye and drafted Veronica as his assistant. She may lack Buffy's physical prowess, but the "tiny blonde one" turns out to have a special talent for sleuthing. In the wake of her sophomore year, the popular crowd abandoned Veronica--even boyfriend Duncan (Teddy Dunn), Lilly's brother. (Hence the theme song: "We Used to Be Friends.") Veronica is on her own until she meets Wallace (Percy Daggs III), the only student unfamiliar with her past, unlike Duncan's sarcastic pal, Logan (Jason Dohring), one of her more ardent foes. He was Lilly's boyfriend and his father is movie star Aaron Echolls (Harry Hamlin). By the end of her junior year, Veronica and Logan will make their peace, but it won't be so easy to win over the school--let alone the town. Throughout the season, Veronica will solve several mysteries both big and small--including the murder of Lilly Kane. But a few questions remain. For instance, at the end of the season finale, Veronica opens the door to greet an unseen visitor with "I was hoping it would be you." So who was it? Fortunately, UPN renewed the critically acclaimed (if ratings challenged) teen noir and that tantalizing question will be answered in the second season premiere. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Review(s): DVD Veronica Mars - The Complete First Season
    Best mystery show ever

Watch this show! Veronica Mars is, by far, the best show on television right now.

If a television series has a tremendously loyal and devoted fan base, then you know it has to be something very special. Fans for Veronica Mars have gone through extreme lengths to promote it. I don't understand why more people don't watch this show unless they are too dimwitted to appreciate an intelligent drama that has intricate plot lines, witty writing, fully developed characters, and a strong, yet charming, female protagonist.

I like to think that most people just haven't heard of it or given it a chance. Do yourself a favor and check it out. Get this DVD and you will be hooked.

Don't let this show be cancelled!

I try to sell this show to so many people, you'd think I had stock options

I think someone else once described this show as "Nancy Drew meets Peyton Place". That's pretty much it really. (Plus an awesome soundtrack, an incredibly engaging cast and razor sharp dialogue.)

The greatest thing about this DVD set however is that it does a nice job of wrapping itself up at the end. There is a nice little cliffhanger on the last disc to get you into season two, but by the end of it, you'll know who killed Lily.

I believe the writers pointed out that they were inspired a bit by Twin Peaks but unlike Twin Peaks they realized they had to actually give the audience an ending every now and again lest we all become bitter and frustrated and disinterested.

It's one of the best tv shows I've seen. I cancelled my cable years ago because nothing good is ever on and the only thing I regret is that it means I have to wait for Veronica Mars to come out on DVD. Still, she's worth the wait.

If you like sassy girls and smart quips (a la The Gilmore Girls) I think you'll find something valid and worthwhile in Veronica as well.

    Watchable

This show depresses me. In almost every episode we have the main character lying to and tricking people and this is supposed to be cool? And then in the early episodes we have the stupid girl-spy stuff, where it's all about having a new hair color and disguise for every episode.

The plot is so unrealistic. In real life Veronica would get beat down or murdered every episode for the way she messes with people. The plot points tend to be rather contrived and "convenient".

The characters are okay, I haven't noticed any bad acting. I must complain that all the guys on the show, besides a few exceptions are just not that nice to look at. Most of them are these skinny little pipsqueaks. The best friend who gets murdered is so difficult to sympathise with, I don't even care about her murder. She seemed like one of this airheaded, hyperactive skanks, that are just frightening because it's hard to believe they have a human soul.

At first I found veronica's character annoying. She has this grating high-pitched voice, that does some irritatingly cutesy narrating at times, reminds me of Sex and the City at those parts. But they could have done far worse. The Veronica actress has good screen presence, star power, mojo or what have you. I've gotten used to her, so now I think she does the job at least.

This show is like a wanna-be Sopranos, except it falls short from the the very beginning. It's doesn't have any soul, it lacks relatablity. I don't need a show to be realistic, but the way this show is unrealistic it's like they just made it up as they went along without thinking or doing research.

Veronica Mars - The Complete Second Season DVD

The second season of Veronica Mars showcases the series' crackling-sharp writing and topnotch acting of star Kristen Bell and the rest of the cast. Veronica still struggles with the class wars in sunny Neptune, Calif., trying to find a balance between high school, love, helping her dad as a private eye, and doing the right thing. The ongoing thread of season 2 is the aftermath of a horrifying tragedy, and as Veronica and dad Keith try to find out what caused it, mysteries only compound. Shifty Sheriff Lamb, town powerbrokers, and various high-school cliques seem to undermine Veronica at every turn. Thankfully, Veronica has more chutzpah than Phillip Marlowe, and the side-of-the-mouth one-liners to match: "Well, actually," Veronica says dryly to a bad guy, "despite popular opinion,... Lost - The Complete First Season DVD

Along with Desperate Housewives, Lost was one of the two breakout shows in the fall of 2004. Mixing suspense and action with a sci-fi twist, it began with a thrilling pilot episode in which a jetliner traveling from Australia to Los Angeles crashes, leaving 48 survivors on an unidentified island with no sign of civilization or hope of imminent rescue. That may sound like Gilligan's Island meets Survivor, but Lost kept viewers tuning in every Wednesday night--and spending the rest of the week speculating on Web sites--with some irresistible hooks (not to mention the beautiful women). First, there's a huge ensemble cast of no fewer than 14 regular characters, and each episode fills in some of the back story on one of them. There's a doctor; an Iraqi... More Info about this DVD

Wonderfalls - The Complete Series DVD

Wonderfalls is probably the most hilarious show you've never seen. An hour-long "dramedy" about a young woman who hears the voices of inanimate objects--which instruct her to help out total strangers--the show aired on Fox in early 2004 to critical acclaim and dismal ratings. After airing four times in terrible time slots, the show was quickly canceled, but not before a hue and cry from a small but fervently devoted cadre of fans went up, begging for all 13 episodes to be released on DVD. Thus, the highest-profile DVD release of a canceled show was born, and the nine unaired episodes of Wonderfalls are finally seeing the light of day.

You may be wondering: is it worth it to check out a show that was axed so quickly? The answer is an unqualified yes, as... More Info about this DVD

Firefly - The Complete Series DVD

As the 2005 theatrical release of Serenity made clear, Firefly was a science fiction concept that deserved a second chance. Devoted fans (or "Browncoats") knew it all along, and with this well-packaged DVD set, those who missed the show's original broadcasts can see what they missed. Creator Joss Whedon's ambitious science-fiction Western (Whedon's third series after Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) was canceled after only 11 of these 14 episodes had aired on the Fox network, but history has proven that its demise was woefully premature. Whedon's generic hybrid got off to a shaky start when network executives demanded an action-packed one-hour premiere ("The Train Job"); in hindsight the intended two-hour pilot (also titled "Serenity," and oddly enough, the...
