Review(s): DVD Captain Video - Cliffhanger Collection
CRAP O RAMA IN SPACE
I DISSAGREE WITH OTHER REVIEWS ABOUT THE PRINT QUALITY...
BUT THE RESTORED TINTING HELPS A BUNCH...
TRIVIA: COUNT THENUMBER OF WOMEN YOU SEE IN THIS SERIAL.
HINT: THERE ARE NONE.
LOTS OF FUN NONE THE LESS...WITH ALL THE BOGUS SCIENCE TALK
AND BRAND X SPECIAL EFFECTS
I love the old movie serials!
I have three Flash Gordons, a Phantom and now, Captain Video! First, the serious criticism. Wooden acting, cheap-looking sets, hand-drawn animation special FX, an impossibly involved, contrived plot, meaningless science-babble jargon. But those are also the charms of this serial. If you want to enjoy some campy fun with good guys versus bad guys, no blood and gore, action a-plenty and happy ending, welcome to Captain Video!!!!!
"with evil forces from Planet Atoma our hero vows to protect Earth ~ Captain Video"
VCI Entertainment and Columbia Pictures present "Captain Video: Master of the Stratosphere" (1951) (digitally remastered), 15 Chapters of a sought after vintage serial loaded with action sequences...there is a great deal of entertainment here for the cliffhanger fans out there...finally for the first time on video the really great Columbia Serial that broke the mold...we have everything a serial fan would want...the tinted sequences by Cinecolor and unique inventions that were unlike any other serial out there in the '50s...now to the plot as the Planet Atoma looks dusty, unlivable and is ruled by despot Vultura...looks like a sequel to the "Buck Rogers" serial...will the Planet Atoma rule the universe beginning with our planet Earth...can Captain Video and his Ranger sidekick stop this mad scheme...how can his technology overcome this vast weaponry of Vultura...be prepared to watch the different tinted scenes which at that time was really something ...don't pass this one up or Captain Video will be hot on your trail.
Under director's Spencer Gordon Bennet and Wallace Grissell with screenplay by Royal K. Cole and Sherman L. Lowe...the cast include Judd Holdren (Captain Video), Larry Stewart (Ranger), George Eldredge (Tobor), Gene Roth (Vultura), Don C. Harvey (Gallagher), William Fawcett (Alpha), Jack Ingram (Aker), I. Stanford Jolley (Zarol), Jimmy Stark (Ranger Rogers), Skelton Knaggs (Retner), Rusty Wescoatt (Beal)...another great serial provided by Columbia Pictures during their heyday in the early '50s.. this serial is one of the best...stuntwork is outstanding and the special effects were astounding for its time...must make mention to keep your eyes peeled for B-Western and Serial veterans Jack Ingram and I. Stanford Jolley, who in my humble opinion were the pioneers of evil gamblers, sheriffs, henchman and all around villains from the early '40s and '50s.

The very first film adventure of the Batman as he goes up against a Japanese spy plotting to destroy the US and assist the Japanese in taking over the world during WWII. Firstly, I'd like to praise Sony for releasing this uncensored and unedited. There are quite a few racial slurs throughout that were common when we were at war and patriotism is played up here quite heavily. The serial is interesting if just for witnessing the depictions of the Americans, the Japanese, and the sellouts who work for Daka, the villain.
The serial introduced "The Bat's Cave" to Batman and also the grandfather clock entrance to it. There's no Batmobile or much of anything pulled out of the utility belt. Plenty of fisticuffs play out on screen with a fight in almost every chapter. This is... In 1952 Superman flew right into the hearts and minds of the American TV audience faster than a speeding bullet. Though most people were already familiar with man of steel through his comic books, as well as the popular radio show, it was the new medium's Adventures of Superman that transformed our resident Kryptonian into a timeless icon. For many young baby boomers, Superman was the ultimate symbol of truth, justice and the American way. After watching this nostalgic trip back in time it is easy to see why: George Reeves. Reeves is the quintessential Superman. He is kind, confident, smart, always does the right thing and can literally do anything physically. Even Reeves' Clark Kent is cool, even cocky without any of the trademarked shy, clumsy and hickish traits the character... There's no Batmobile, and Robert Lowery looks a bit, ahem, well-fed as the Caped Crusader, but Columbia Pictures' 1949 black-and-white serial Batman and Robin is up to its cape and cowl in cliffhangers, crime capers, and good old-fashioned rock-em-sock-em action. Directed at a breakneck pace by serial vet Spencer Gordon Bennett, the Complete 1949 Movie Serial Collection's 15 episodes pits Lowery's Batman and Johnny Duncan as the Boy Wonder against arch-villain The Wizard, who has designs on a remote-control device that doubles as a death ray. Jane Adams's Vicki Vale is on hand to fall into peril at least once per episode, while Ed Wood regular Lyle Talbot looks on sternly as Commissioner Gordon. Viewers weaned on Tim Burton's dark, sleek interpretation of the Batman mythos... KING OF THE ROCKET MEN is a very enjoyable serial and I'm overjoyed it's coming to DVD at last.
By this late in the serial game (1949), Republic Studios had a tendency to go through the motions, getting by on the reputation (and re-releases) of earlier, better serials and the studio's matchless stunt and special effects men. That changed in 1948, when Columbia released SUPERMAN, which - despite the fact that it was a disappointment on every level - became the biggest money-making serial ever made. Republic, which had perfected "flying human" special effects with their earlier serials DARKEST AFRICA (1936) and THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL (1941), concocted their own airborne super-hero, Rocket Man, and bested the Man of Steel handily.
