DVD Swamp Thing
Horror vet Wes Craven wrote and directed this campy swamp romp adapted from the DC Comic of the same name. Adrienne Barbeau stars as cleavangelically blessed government agent Alice Cable, sent to the bayou to guard the brilliant Dr. Alec Holland. Holland is using recombinant DNA to create "a plant with an animal's aggressive power for survival." Let's hope none of that volatile secret formula gets spilled! Swamp Thing is an unusual mix of monster movie and superhero flick, but definitely an enjoyable ride. Craven deliberately uses comic-book-style wipes and transitions to keep us from taking anything too seriously, and Louis Jourdan keeps up the tone with his camp performance as the evil Arcane. Also keep an eye out for young Reggie Batts in a terrific deadpan performance as Jude, the helpful gas station attendant. --Ali Davis
Still Holds Up! perhaps like old tape....but it's holding nonetheless!
I hated this movie as a kid. Even then I could smell cheese. But the older I've gotten, the more of a Swamp Thing fan I've become. I found this one on DVD the other day, and as a laugh, bought it.
I'm impressed.
Just try it. It's not as bad as you remember. So by that rationale...are movies getting worse?
Uncut as opposed to what some say
I see one reviewer stating this is the "cut" version when in fact it is actually the FULL version NOT shown in theatres. It has the orgy scene included which wasnt in the theatrical version. I say stick with fans of the film and not some teenybopper stating what he/she thinks is "fact".
I remember reading the comics and was a big fan of the swamp thing when this film came out. For most people of that time the film was a welcome addition to any swamp thing fan. The movie wad dark and semi violent. Sure the rubber suits arent the BEST if youre spoiled by the effects of today. This film is campy sure as Craven did it to be slightly campy, look at the acting folks! LOL ANYONE thinking this film is "serious" is taking themselves too seriously! It was a low budget film to begin with and Craven sought to make a campy film that was his version of the comic book character. It's no "Alien" or "Predator" for sure but it wasnt supposed to be. Many people just dont "Get" the idea behind B Movies and just because its a B Movie doesnt mean it will stink.
This film did well enough to generate one silly sequel and a tv series.
Goofy, campy fun
Horror maestro Wes Craven (Nightmare on Elm Street, Hills Have Eyes, Last House on the Left, Cursed) directed this goofy, campy take on the DC Comics character, and it's still fun to this day. The babeilicious Adrienne Barbeau plays government agent Alice Cable, sent to guard the brilliant Dr. Alec Holland (Ray Wise) who has developed a secret and powerful formula that enhances plantlife, or something to that effect. Before you know it, the evil Arcane (Louis Jordan) and his crew of henchmen (including Last House on the Left alum David Hess) are on the scene trying to steal the formula, and Holland is doused with it, set on fire, and runs into the swamp. It's not until later that he re-emerges as the Swamp Thing (Dick Durock in a big, green, rubber suit), and sets out for revenge. While it's funny that a regarded horror director like Craven would take a horror comic and turn it into a camp fest (whether it was intentional or not is still up in the air), Swamp Thing still manages to be a fun ride for the most part, as long as you don't take it seriously. A side note, this re-released DVD from MGM is the edited version of the film, so Barbeau's famous topless scene is cut (*tear*).
I've read alot of negative reviews for this one, and none of the people writing these reviews really seem to grasp the concept of a Jim Wynorski film. Jim Wynorski makes b-movies, ONLY b-movies, and he makes them well. If you're unfamiliar with what a b-movie is, you should'n't be writing a review for this particular film, but I'll give you some background. Remember those old fifties drive-in films, you know, the kind they play on Mystery Science Theater 3000? Stereo-typical characters, guys in rubber suits playing cheesy monsters, and that special 80's touch up, huge breasts every couple of minutes...these are all elements of the b-movie. You're SUPPOSED to make fun of it. You're SUPPOSED to actually enjoy yourself watching a movie for once. Return of Swamp Thing is an excellent... The Howling 2 is a real let down to the original Howling. It does not even come close to capturing the same beastly terror. The brilliant special effects of the Howling 1 is what made that film so special. In part 2 the special effects have gone backwards, they are infact a laughable attempt. Sybil Danning's fleshy expose is the best thing about this film. Its a total disrespect to the original.

"Hammer Horror Series" presents some of the studios best films from the early sixties period, though they might not be the most familiar to Hammer fans. A few, in fact, might come with baggage attached, but this collection dispells some of that baggage. In particular, Hammer's "Phantom of the Opera" has suffered more abuse over the years than any other of its films. The hard truth is, it's pretty good. The reason it has such a bum reputation might be because most people first saw it on television, which seriously impaired it. In it's proper aspect ratio, and with the extra scenes filmed for American TV left out, it's really pretty good. Not perfect, but pretty good. The biggest liability with the film are the horrendous opera sequences. "Evil of Frankenstein" has similarly been... THE BELA LUGOSI COLLECTION, from Universal Studios Home Entertainment, is the first Universal DVD I have bought in a while that was a dual density single disk with no technical problems. After having to return two different copies of ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS to Amazon.com because of technical glitches from two-sided printing, this technically flawless disk is a most welcome addition to the home of anyone who loves Mr. Lugosi. But I am still knocking it down one star because of laziness on the part of Universal in not having Sara Karloff or Bela Lugosi, Jr. chatting about their fathers. Or not having any real bonus material. Boris Karloff stars in three of these five movies, including one that has Lugosi in only a small role. Visual and sound quality are outstanding on all... In 1952 Superman flew right into the hearts and minds of the American TV audience faster than a speeding bullet. Though most people were already familiar with man of steel through his comic books, as well as the popular radio show, it was the new medium's Adventures of Superman that transformed our resident Kryptonian into a timeless icon. For many young baby boomers, Superman was the ultimate symbol of truth, justice and the American way. After watching this nostalgic trip back in time it is easy to see why: George Reeves. Reeves is the quintessential Superman. He is kind, confident, smart, always does the right thing and can literally do anything physically. Even Reeves' Clark Kent is cool, even cocky without any of the trademarked shy, clumsy and hickish traits the character...
