DVD Little House on the Prairie - The Complete Season 9
The ninth season of Little House on the Prairie was re-invented as Little House: A New Beginning after star Michael Landon decided to leave the series. (He continued to produce, direct and write for the show.) The first episode began with the departure of Landon's Pa Ingalls, who fell on hard economic times and moved his family to the city . He returned for just one harrowing two-parter, "Home Again," in which son Albert (Matthew Laborteaux) battled a morphine addiction. In Landon's absence, it was up to the other denizens of Walnut Grove to provide drama, and provide they did. The meddling, gossipy Harriet Oleson (Katherine MacGregor) played town villain, followed by her whiny adopted daughter Nancy (Allison Balson), who was annoying but never as deliciously wicked as her predecessor Nellie (Alison Arngrim, who makes a welcome guest appearance). Laura (Melissa Gilbert) is all grown up and living with husband Almanzo (Dean Butler) and their daughter Rose. The show also cast a pre-scandal Shannen Doherty as Jenny Wilder to fill the spunky young protagonist role vacated by Gilbert.
Little House continued its run of darker stories in this season, from a crazed father (Robert Loggia) who shoots his daughter and wife to a suicide attempt by Jenny after her father dies, filling in other episodes with fluffy schmaltz featuring some of the other townsfolk (you know they're desperate when an entire show is about a wayward orangutan). The series also liked to feature outcasts teaching the town lessons in tolerance: in one case a circus midget can't get a job because of his looks, and a "wild boy" turns out just to be an abused mute. Despite its attempts to fill the void left by Pa and Ma Ingalls with new characters, however, the long-running series lost its spark without Landon and did not last after the ninth season.
The boxed set includes an 86-page booklet: Little House on the Prairie A-Z by historian Patrick Loubatiere, who also interviews Dean Butler and Alison Arngrim in the DVD bonus features. The interviews don't reveal much, other than Loubatiere's smugness for knowing more about Little House than the stars of the show. --Ellen A. Kim

A must-have
This is a must-have for any true Little House fan.
I have to agree that the 9th season is not the best, but the extras are worth the purchase alone. The book is a treasure!
The best!
"Little house on the prairie" is the best television show ever. We care about the characters because they were so well designed.
The book accompanying the DVD set is incredibly well done, with plenty of wonderful anecdotes and pictures.

Season 6 is my favourite Little House Season, and the end to what I call the "Mary in Trauma" Years. In Seasons 4 - 6 everything bad that could happen to anyone did - from going blind, to being held hostage, not once, but twice, with all the bad things climaxing in season six the burning of the blind school and the loss of her child. These years showcase Melissa Sue Anderson as one of the most amazing actresses of the 70's and 80's. I was most anxious to get season 6, expecting the three part 'Little House Years' and the pivotal deleted scene from 'May We Make Them Proud' - where the blind boy goes into the bathroom to blow his nose, consequently resulting in the deaths of Adam Jr and Alice Garvey, neither of which are included in this collection. Other than that disappointment - I... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Michael Landon DVD Release Date: Released the 26 October 2004 Usually ships in 6 to 7 days

I was excited to buy the DVD box sets especially since the box covers brag at what lengths had gone into making the episodes at such highest quality. Truthfully, you will be getting better quality recording them off TV.
The TV episodes are probably an approximate 42 to 43 minutes to where the DVD episodes are an approximate 45 minutes. However, there are still some scenes cut out in the DVD episodes.
Some cuts I found are:
In the episode "Fagin", an important scene where Charles tells Albert that since he is having a hard time with kids at school making fun of him for not having a father, why not start calling him "Pa". Instead, they cut to the scene where Laura overhears Albert call Charles "Pa" and she mentions it to the boy, who tells her that... Year two of Earl Hamner's The Waltons still finds the original cast complete and the show humming along nicely on nostalgia for an earlier America, specifically the Depression-era 1930s, a time of sacrifice and family unity as The Waltons portrays it. The characters we came to know so well in season one (see The Waltons: The Complete First Season) continue to live in a spirit of cooperation and generosity, and with hope that a younger generation of Waltons will prosper and dream new dreams for everyone.
The 24 episodes included in this box set feature a number of very strong stories, including a handful of classics, all immersed in the series' typically old-Hollywood production values. (Several season two shows were directed by Waltons' star Ralph Waite.)...
