    Threads - A Positive Review

I have read a lot of negetive reviews about the shorter version of the episode "Threads" being on this set rather than the longer more boring version. I just picked up the set and have only watched the episode "Threads" (I watched the season when it aired). I thought the shorter version was better and quicker to get to the point, there was a lot of padding in the longer version. Although I don't agree with MGM's Decision to not to put the broadcast version on the DVD, I'm glad they didn't. I don't think I will trade in my set to get the longer version.

    Wait until it is re-released

Season 8 was an excellent season, far better than I anticipated and far better than Season 7. Based on episode quality alone I would give this set 5 stars. I find the problems with Threads and the missing special features insulting. I, and many others, have purchased the previous seven seasons and feel ripped off.

Please contact and ask MGM/Sony to entirely re-release this set. People who own it already should be able to exchange it for free. I can not believe there was a problem fitting all of this onto five DVDs since the Region 4 set is on five, but if it takes 6 discs, then make it 6.

    love sg-1, but...

    the extras are getting worse...

very little behind the scenes stuff, and the commentaries range from horrible to OK. The worst commentary ever, in the history of DVD commentaries, was on New Order, parts 1 and 2.
Andy Mikita and Gary Jones basically sit and goof around, rarely talking about the show, and when they do they're insulting to the cast and crew. Add to that the usage of a four letter word that begins with sh, ends with it, and the commentary is basically useless. I'm not a prude by any stretch of the imagination, but a lot of SG-1 fans are young kids and this just isn't appropriate.
Gary Jones should not be used for commentaries ever again. Everything is a joke to this guy, to the point that he's trying to be funny when it's not appropriate. I mean, he may be a nice guy and all, but gimme a break already.

The transfer is decent, but as usual the geniuses at MGM encode these dvds in 29.97 with the 3:2 pulldown PRE-applied (and not in the proper 23.976 format with 3:2 pulldown flags in the encode), which results in interlacing being apparent in many cuts - which just looks unprofessional, and also decreases quality as the bitrate has to account for 6 extra frames every second. Encoding this way also affects the quality of the extra frames, as they're interlaced and can contain visual information from two different scenes, which causes colorization issues.
This is an issue which has plagued these box sets from Season 1 and nobody seems to care.
Call me a perfectionist, but knowing how easy it is to do this correctly, I have a problem with paying $50 when it's done incorrectly.

The season itself was good, aside from Mobeus, which completely ruined not just the season but the future of the entire series.
Loose ends are tied up and the Goa'uld are finally defeated.

Worth renting, not worth buying until the full Threads is included, and Gary Jones permanently banned from making commentaries.

Stargate Atlantis - The Complete First Season DVD

It's not a franchise on the order of Law & Order, CSI, or Star Trek--not yet, anyway--but with Stargate Atlantis, a more than worthy successor to SG-1, Stargate is becoming a nice little cottage industry in itself. The premise, in a nutshell: The Ancients, the greatest race the universe has ever known (or something like that), abandoned Earth millions of years ago, taking Atlantis with them; they then sunk the entire city in order to escape the clutches of the dreaded Wraith, an implacable bunch of villains who nourish themselves by sucking the life from humans. Now, as the two-hour "Rising" pilot details, a new team has gained access to the legendary city. Once they arrive, Atlantis loses the power to sustain its protective shield and rises to... Stargate SG-1 Season 7 Boxed Set DVD

A gradual shift in overall style, character homecomings and departures, and evolving on- and off-screen roles for the major players are among the attractions of the seventh season of Stargate SG-1. Spread out over five discs, these 21 episodes are ample indication that changes notwithstanding--and admittedly, not all of them are for the better--the series remains arguably the best-made, most compelling sci-fi program on television.

Perhaps most noticeable is the reduced role of star Richard Dean Anderson, who opted to limit his number of trips to Vancouver, where Stargate SG-1 is filmed. But that's not a bad thing. The show's ability to poke fun at itself has always been a strong suit, and while Anderson still brings a welcome sense of humor to his portrayal of... More Info about this DVD

Battlestar Galactica - Season One DVD

Battlestar Galactica's Edward James Olmos wasn't kidding when he said "the series is even better than the miniseries." As developed by sci-fi TV veteran Ronald D. Moore, the "reimagined" BG is exactly what it claims to be: a drama for grown-ups in a science-fiction setting. The mature intelligence of the series is its greatest asset, from the tenuous respect between Galactica's militarily principled commander Adama (Olmos) and politically astute President Roslin (Mary McDonnell) to the barely suppressed passion between ace Viper pilot "Apollo" (a.k.a. Adama's son Lee, played by Jamie Bamber) and the brashly insubordinate Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff), whose multifaceted character is just one of many first-season highlights. Picking up where the miniseries ended (it's included... More Info about this DVD

Stargate SG-1 Season 6 Boxed Set DVD

The biggest change for Stargate SG-1's sixth season was its move to the Sci-Fi Channel. Financial rescue or genre haven from cancellation? Whatever the behind-the-scenes politics, the departure of Daniel Jackson (actor Michael Shanks) the previous year most certainly contributed to the need to run a tighter ship somewhere. With the addition of his replacement, Jonas Quinn, the new show dynamic (hinted at by the new title theme) meant far more convolutedly involved story arcs and less individual focus. One of very few solo spotlights came from Christopher Judge writing his own show, when "The Changeling" saw Teal'c act out a life as a fireman. One reason for its being a fan favorite was the cameo from still-alive-after-all Daniel Jackson. There'd be several more through the year,... More Info about this DVD

Stargate Atlantis - Rising (Pilot Episode) DVD

There are those who may regard it as old wine in a new bottle, but that doesn't mean that Stargate Atlantis doesn't have something to offer to both newcomers and fans of Stargate SG-1, the franchise from which it evolved. Co-creators and executive producers Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, both of whom worked on the earlier show, have concocted an appealing premise for this spin-off, in which the so-called Ancients abandoned Earth millions of years earlier, taking their city (i.e., Atlantis) with them. Now, a new team has gained access (via the Stargate, the "wormhole" our heroes use to travel to different worlds) to the legendary sunken city, where new adventures and deadly new enemies await. Stargate SG-1 stars Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks make... More Info about this DVD
