  • DVD Battle of Britain (Collector's Edition)

There's something about this film that's so irresistible, despite its grandiose manipulation. Maybe because it recounts the greatest air battle in history, achieving the greatest aerial battle in film history. Maybe because it has such a terrific cast (Harry Andrews, Michael Caine, Trevor Howard, Curt Jurgens, Laurence Olivier, Nigel Patrick, Christopher Plummer, Michael Redgrave, Ralph Richardson, Robert Shaw, Patrick Wymark, and Edward Fox). Maybe because it's so technically well-made, thanks to the Bond team of producer Harry Saltzman and director Guy Hamilton and the great cinematographer Freddie Young. Or maybe because there is something truly riveting about watching the British kick the Nazis back to Germany. --Bill Desowitz

Review(s): DVD Battle of Britain (Collector's Edition)
    Restored Version At Last

This recent release of the Battle of Britain is finally what is is intended to be. A wonderful, immense story (and movie) of Great Britains Finest Hour. The movie is restored to its original (VHS) release, music and sub-titles. The letterbox is very good. The 2 disc set has many added features. Several documentary type programs, added commentary and even restored original musical score. I recommend this to everyone who may be interested in this historic event. (and especially to those who may already own either the VHS or earlier DVD) BUY this right away!

Battle of Britain - a great film of an epic moment in history

    Great film.

The 'German' flier was in fact Polish and was referred to as 'A Bosch B...' and not a 'Posh Ba...' as in a previous review, Bosch being one of the more polite words used by the English to refer to the Germans during WWII.

Get it and watch all those flying sequences shot from a B-17 with cameras mounted in the gun turrets

    Excellent film

I disagree with a previous viewer. I remember seeing this film when it first came out. It was produced by one of the producers of the James Bond films,Harry Saltzman, and director Guy Hamilton,so you are assured of plenty of action (it also is quite acurate and is a fitting tribute to the Brits in their "finest hour"). The cast of Olivier, Caine and other fine British actors give this film an extra sheen and realism. It is in the mould of many '60s films about the second world war in that it approaches the topic by following a variety of people in their various roles (air marshalls, pilots, ground crew, civilians) through the summer months of 1940 during the battle. It does this very well. Of interest to flying buffs are the authentic Hurricane and Messerschmit fighters and HE111 bombers (from the Spanish air force), The visual experience of the movie is stunning, and, like the Great Escape and other war movies of that vintage, exciting and entertaining to watch. One scene stands out: a German flier parachutes into a British hay field and politely goes up to the British farmer, bows and says "Goot Afternoon". The Brit brings up his pitchfork and exclaims, "You posh Bas...., up with your arms, up with them!!" Unforgettable!! I currently have a copy of the original DVD when it came out a few years ago and will certainly purchase the extended cut version. I recommend this film without hesitation.

    A Bridge Too Far DVD

This massive 1977 adaptation by director Richard Attenborough (Gandhi) of Cornelius Ryan's novel features an all-star cast in an epic rendering of a daring but ultimately disastrous raid behind enemy lines in Holland during the Second World War. A lengthy and exhaustive look at the mechanics of warfare and the price and futility of war, the film is almost too large for its aims but manages to be both picaresque and affecting, particularly in the performance of James Caan. The impressive cast includes Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Dirk Bogarde, Sean Connery, and Liv Ullmann among others. While not a classic war film, it nevertheless manages to be a consistently interesting and exciting adventure. --Robert Lane More Info about this DVD

Major Dundee (The Extended Version) DVD

This restoration of Sam Peckinpah's 1965 western Major Dundee is nothing short of magnificent, a noble attempt at restoring a famously wrecked masterpiece. When Peckinpah went over budget and over schedule during the Mexico shoot, unshot scenes were canceled and the footage rudely cut by the studio. The director disowned the results. In 2005, surviving footage was patched back in, and a new musical soundtrack commissioned to replace the score Peckinpah hated. This raises some legitimate questions about interpreting a director's intentions, and about messing with film history, but Major Dundee--The Extended Version is such a rousing, mysterious experience, one feels grateful.

Major Dundee (Charlton Heston) is a vainglorious officer busted to the decidedly inglorious job... More Info about this DVD

    Ben-Hur DVD

Ben-Hur scooped an unprecedented 11 Academy Awards® in 1959 and, unlike some later rivals, richly deserved every single one. This is epic filmmaking on a scale that had not been seen before and is unlikely ever to be seen again. But it's not just running time or a cast of thousands that makes an epic, it's the subject matter, and here the subject--Prince Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) and his estrangement from old Roman pal Messala (Stephen Boyd)--is rich, detailed, and sensitively handled. Director William Wyler, who had been a junior assistant on MGM's original silent version back in 1925, never sacrifices the human focus of the story in favor of spectacle, and is aided immeasurably by Miklos Rozsa's majestic musical score, arguably the greatest ever written for a Hollywood... Kingdom of Heaven (Widescreen Edition) DVD

It's hard to believe Ridley Scott's handsome epic won't become the cinematic touchstone of the Crusades for years to come. Kingdom of Heaven is greater than the sum of its parts, delivering a vital, mostly engrossing tale following Balian (Orlando Bloom), a lonely French blacksmith who discovers he's a noble heir and takes his father's (Liam Neeson) place in the center of the universe circa 1184: Jerusalem. Here, grand battles and backdoor politics are key as Scott and first-time screenwriter William Monahan fashion an excellent storyline to tackle the centuries-long conflict. Two forward-thinking kings, Baldwin (Edward Norton in an uncredited yet substantial role) and Saladin (Ghassan Massoud), hold an uneasy truce between Christians (who hold the city) and Muslims while factions... The Big Red One - The Reconstruction (Two-Disc Special Edition) DVD

Sam Fuller's The Big Red One was already one of the best films of 1980, despite the fact that the version released to theaters ran barely half as long as the director's cut. Fuller had been America's ballsiest B-movie auteur, an ex-newspaper reporter of the hardnosed breed who made fiercely personal, radically stylized, and politically outspoken films between the early '50s (The Steel Helmet, Pickup on South Street) and the early '60s (Shock Corridor). The Big Red One was his long-dreamt-of account of World War II as experienced by his own squad of the 1st Infantry Division, USA, from the first shot fired (by a dead man, on the coast of North Africa) to the last (in a concentration camp in Czechoslovakia).

Even in the studio-truncated version, there... More Info about this DVD
