    Amazingly good

If you have never seen Gargoyles, you simply don't understand how amazing this show is.

In my opinion, this is the best thing ever produced in American animation, certainly the best thing Disney ever produced, certainly the best American animation produced in the nineties, and perhaps the best written animated work of all time.

Gargoyles will make you laugh, it excite you, and it will move you. In fact, if you've seen the episodes enough times to recognize them by name, even just reading their titles will move you! I get choked up just reading these reviews. Which, by the way, are beautifully written and stand as testiment to the amazingly good writing here, recognized by those who know writing.

If this were a ten-star system I would give Gargoyles ten stars.

If this were a thumbs-up-thumbs-down system I would give Gargoyles two thumbs up.

    It Only Gets Better

I was delighted when the first season of "Gargoyles" came out on DVD. And if it's possible, I'm even happier that we're getting the second season as well. Season one sets up the concept, characters, setting, and everything else. In season two, the audience knows the score and the stories can delve deeper into the characters and ideas and broaden the scope of the show. This half of the season includes some of my favorite episodes, such as "The Mirror", "The Price", and the multipart "City of Stone" which will include commentary. And like great episodes of most continuity based series, you can't just watch them a lone and get the full effect. You need to know who these characters are in order to get why these events are important. So if you don't have Season One on DVD yet, pick it up when you buy Season 2 Part 1. This is great television, truly something that whole families can really appreciate and genuinely enjoy together.

    The best gets better

This is where the show became more than a simple cartoon, it's characters and themes introduced in the first and all too short season fleshed out. The second season was four times as long as the first, allowing the writers plenty of room to give dimension to a large and diverse cast, deepening the mythos behind what some considered what helped bring about the cartoon renaissance of the 90's. We learn the history behind some of the most popular characters, allies and enemies alike (how Demona lived the last 1000 thousand years, how Xanatos made his fortune), we meet new characters through the Aavalon trip (the Avalon clan, Angela) and a romance builds to a successful climax with the three part season-ender Hunter's Moon. Now, we have volume one, in all it's uncut glory with no bad VHS copies and Disney logos to mar the experience. Let's hope for volume two, where it all comes together.

Gargoyles - The Complete First Season (Special 10th Anniversary Edition) DVD

Since its 1994 debut, Disney's animated series Gargoyles has attracted a sophisticated viewership for its unusually thoughtful storyline, mature characters, literary allusions (Arthurian lore, Shakespeare), and parade of celebrity voiceovers. Part Gothic fantasy and part contemporary urban drama, Gargoyles begins with a brutal, 10th-century battle over a Scottish castle, which is guarded at night by winged gargoyles who become flesh in the dark (but who return to stone by day). Under the leadership of Goliath (Keith David), the gargoyles ward off an attack by Vikings, yet are met with disdain by those they protect, including a princess and her advisors. Such is the gargoyles' lot until they are betrayed by a friend and turned to stone for a thousand years. Rescued by a... More Info about this DVD

Batman - The Animated Series, Volume Four (From the New Batman Adventures) (DC Comics Classic Collection) DVD

Contrary to the reviewers who thought this was cheap animation, I didn't notice, maybe because it's not my field and I don't examine a work for its state of the art methodology or technology. I took it at face value and it met up with my standards. The sound was even okay. I'm pretty happy with the amount of entertainment wrapped up in this package. More Info about this DVD

Superman - The Animated Series, Volume Two (DC Comics Classic Collection) DVD

While Warner Bros. Superman animated series never lived up to the excellence of the Batman animated series, this second volume of the series contains plenty of solid animated superhero action for all ages. Tim Daly once again provides the voice for the Man of Steel, while Dana Delany is Lois Lane once again, and the always excellent Clancy Brown is once again the nefarious Lex Luthor. The episodes collected here include the 3-part "World's Finest" arc (which is also included on the upcoming Batman animated series Vol. 4 DVD set) in which we see the first cross-over event with Superman and Batman as they take on the Joker and Luthor. Also featured here are the first animated appearences of allies Dr. Fate and Steel, and Supes faces off against Bizzaro, Mr. Mxyzptlk, Metallo, Darkseid... More Info about this DVD
