Review(s): DVD Northern Exposure - The Complete Fourth Season
Where words leave off, music begins. - Heinrich Heine

The replacement music on the DVDs has been such a mighty controversy regarding the release of NX on DVD. It's such a shame because I haven't heard of any other TV show being released on DVD that has had this problem.

I loved the show, and I really didn't notice the replacement music on Seasons 1-3, so I thought it could be forgiven. I figured that the original music was an artistic decision on the part of the creators of the series. If they couldn't get the rights at an affordable price for the DVDs, they would have to make more artistic decisions regarding replacement music. How bad could it be? How far could they go wrong?

Unfortunately, with Season 4, I am noticing it, and for me, I'm realizing how much the original choices of music were the heart of some scenes, and very often the heart of the all-important final scene, the one that leaves you with "that feeling". Often the music is essential for "that feeling".

So I realize I fall into the "original music is essential" camp of NX fans. If the music isn't the heart of the show's emotions for you, great. But Season 4 is the last one that I'll buy unless they find a way to release the series with the original music.

I'm glad I purchased seasons 1-4 to show my support (or else how else would they know how popular the show is so they can think about buying the rights to the original music), but I'm done with these DVDs. I'll watch them through and put them on a shelf, give them to relatives and hope they can get into them, but for my enjoyment, the original music was essential, and it's missing.

Hopefully, they won't be like David Bowie CDs, undergoing 3 or 4 releases until hardcore fans give him the finger and say "F*** You, David, I've given you enough money. I'm sticking with the Rykodiscs" like I did.

    WTF!!!

I made an errant judgment by not reading the reviews about the DVDs missing the original soundtrack before buying the whole collection. I'm totally pissed because the show just isn't the same without it. The original soundtrack was such an essential part of the show and the cheesy replacement doesn't give it the same vibe or consistency throughout the show. The people responsible should be ashamed for releasing this show on DVD without it's original soundtrack. I wonder if the tapes that were released a few years ago had the original soundtrack? If so, i'll just buy those and transfer them to DVD.

Northern Exposure season 4 on DVD

I love Northern Exposure. It never fails to entertain and make you think about things in a different way. It often times touches me. The characters are well written as well as acted. There are outrageous scenes as well as the most tender moments.

I just received all 5 Norhtern Exposure box sets from Amazont. I notice Seasons 1&2, 4, and 5 all have the same packaging (logo on front, logo on spine, discs slide out the right side). But on the 3rd Season set i received, the discs slide out the LEFT side, and there is NO logo on the spine. In fact NOTHING on the spine. No DVD logo, no Universal logo, no Northern Exposure logo. It will look a bit out of place on my shelf, when it's the only box set without the title on the spine of the box. Does anyone else have this problem? Is this inherent in ALL 3rd season box sets, or did i get a mis-print? Any help would be great. Thanks. More Info about this DVD

Northern Exposure - The Complete Fifth Season DVD

Welcome back to Cicely, Alaska, where whimsy and magical realism are always in season. While Northern Exposure's heart is as big as all outdoors, its charms are starting to wear a little thin in its penultimate season, particularly John Cullum's New Age-y DJ McDreamy, Chris (one longs for that season 1 episode in which he lost his voice). But there is compensation in such sweet, unexpected moments as the one in "A River Doesn't Run Through It," in which bush pilot Maggie O'Connell (Janine Turner) finds the tape recorder of Dr. Joel Fleishman (Rob Morrow), who is out in the field, and, missing his voice, sits down to listen to one of his tapes. The long-awaited thawing of what Joel calls their "bizarre" relationship is this season's biggest development. Their efforts to "go out" and... More Info about this DVD

Northern Exposure - The Complete First Season
Whether it's a snowy nude sprint down Main Street, the mysterious appearance of a long-lost relative, or the improbable death of yet another of Maggie's boyfriends, life's never dull in the remote hamlet of Cicely, Alaska. Colorful characters and quirky plots propelled Northern Exposure into the hearts of millions of viewers, earning the CBS "dramedy" series seven Emmy awards between its 1990 debut and its demise six seasons later. In season 1, we meet Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow), an urban New York yuppie who consents to four years of rural servitude after Alaska pays his medical-school tuition. Joel's fish-out-of-water adventures drive the show, but it's the quirky ensemble of characters--Chris, the DJ/philosopher... More Info about this DVD

Northern Exposure - Seasons 1-3 Bundle DVD

I havent't watched all of the DVD's yet but what I have watched is great except for side 2 of disk 1, 1st year. There is a glitch on the disk and it stalls and refuses to proceed without skipping ahead consequently missing part of the story. Another annoyance, at the very beginning of disk one, year one, there is advertising for other DVD's and it seems to be impossible to fast forward or skip these so one has to watch the ads whether one choosed to or not. In year two it seems that one disk only has one story instead of two on side two of I think disk two. That was a surprise.
Northern Exposure has always been one of my favorite programs and I am enjoyng watching the episodes again. Would be much better without the glitches. More Info about this DVD
