Northern Exposure - The Complete First Season
Whether it's a snowy nude sprint down Main Street, the mysterious appearance of a long-lost relative, or the improbable death of yet another of Maggie's boyfriends, life's never dull in the remote hamlet of Cicely, Alaska. Colorful characters and quirky plots propelled Northern Exposure into the hearts of millions of viewers, earning the CBS "dramedy" series seven Emmy awards between its 1990 debut and its demise six seasons later. In season 1, we meet Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow), an urban New York yuppie who consents to four years of rural servitude after Alaska pays his medical-school tuition. Joel's fish-out-of-water adventures drive the show, but it's the quirky ensemble of characters--Chris, the DJ/philosopher (John Corbett), Holling, the bartender (John Cullum), Maurice, the town patriarch (Barry Corbin), Ed, the filmmaker (Darren E. Burrows), and Maggie, the bush pilot (Janine Turner), among others–-that keeps the series consistently entertaining. The town develops its own offbeat personality as well, a Mayberry-meets-Twin-Peaks blend of Native mysticism, Aurora Borealis-induced dreams, unlikely tales of long-lost family members, and rumors of a Bigfoot-like creature known simply as "Adam." Northern Exposure provides a utopian escape--a place where life is interesting but never dangerous, everyone's insightful, the mystical becomes real, and nobody's burdened with a mundane 9-to-6 desk job. Cicely is a delightful place to visit, even if it's only for an hour at a time. A mid-season replacement, season 1 consists of just eight episodes on two DVDs. Each episode includes 5-10 minutes of outtakes and deleted scenes. --Shane Burnett

Northern Exposure - The Complete Second Season
The colorful cast of characters from Cicely, Alaska, returns for a new set of adventures in Northern Exposure: The Complete Second Season. While much of the first season was devoted to establishing the plot, each of the seven episodes in season 2 helps us to know the offbeat ensemble of Cicely residents a little better. Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow), the New York urbanite stationed in small-town Alaska to pay off his medical-school tuition, still complains constantly about his assignment, but it's clear the town's growing on him when he passes up an opportunity to return home (if only temporarily). We learn from town patriarch Maurice (Barry Corbin) that retired astronauts have groupies, and when a beautiful woman steals the voice of DJ "Chris in the Morning" (John Corbett), it's no huge surprise when the long-deceased spirit of "One Who Waits" provides Chris with an ancient Indian cure.

But it's the chemistry between Joel and Maggie (Janine Turner) that really makes the series sizzle. The season is book-ended by a pair of breakups that leave first Joel, and then Maggie single, clearing the way for the romance to come in later seasons. The season includes "Spring Break," one of the best-loved episodes from the series. With the impending arrival of spring, libidos run amok, a wave of petty crime hits the town, and the men in town blow off steam au naturale in the annual "Running of the Bulls."

Season 2's packaging and extras are virtually identical to those from season 1. The two-disc set comes sheathed in a collectible mini zippered nylon "parka," and each episode includes deleted scenes and bloopers. There are no retrospectives or interviews with cast and crew, and no printed materials accompany the discs. --Shane Burnett

Review(s): DVD Northern Exposure - The Complete First and Second Seasons
    Quirky before quirky was cool.

I really liked this series about an unusual small town and its inhabitants. If not for its success, we would never have seen the likes of Monk, Eureka, House, etc. Check it out if you've never seen it.

One Of The Best Shows of All Time

The bottom line is that if you love Northern Exposure, you will love this DVD. For years reruns were televised on A&E and the Hallmark channel, luckily about the time they stopped televising them these DVDs came out. This is one of the best shows out there. Lately they have put every nonsense show ever televised. It is good to see this one produced on DVD. I have never watched an episode that didn't make me feel better than I did before I watched it.

    Worth the wait.

I didn't have a TV when this show aired. I missed a revolution in television in which shows exercised story arcs which took more than a week or two to complete (cliffhanger sweeps week specials). Now, they're commonplace. In 1990 ... it was daring. And this series deserved the gamble. Watch the "Soapy Sanderson" episode, you'll see.

Renting seasons 1 and 2 last year, I saw clearly that the production team set up a situation with the "fish out of water" Joel, his "love at first dislike" sparring partner Maggie, and all the other idiosyncratic supporting characters ... then took careful time milking the milieu ... and ended up with a touching lover story. Joel and Maggie's thawing out ... but also Joel's relationship with Cicely, Alaska. Joel thinking that, as a young, talented doctor, he's got life figured out ... over the episodes, we see clearly that he's clueless.

It's not even dated. Looks as new now as it did in 1990.

It's a great price these seasons, and if you watch from the pilot to the end of season 2, you'll realize that this series had spark, magic, and heart. Go ahead, give Northern Exposure an encore.

I just received all 5 Norhtern Exposure box sets from Amazont. I notice Seasons 1&2, 4, and 5 all have the same packaging (logo on front, logo on spine, discs slide out the right side). But on the 3rd Season set i received, the discs slide out the LEFT side, and there is NO logo on the spine. In fact NOTHING on the spine. No DVD logo, no Universal logo, no Northern Exposure logo. It will look a bit out of place on my shelf, when it's the only box set without the title on the spine of the box. Does anyone else have this problem? Is this inherent in ALL 3rd season box sets, or did i get a mis-print? Any help would be great. Thanks. More Info about this DVD

Northern Exposure - The Complete Fourth Season DVD

The replacement music on the DVDs has been such a mighty controversy regarding the release of NX on DVD. It's such a shame because I haven't heard of any other TV show being released on DVD that has had this problem.

I loved the show, and I really didn't notice the replacement music on Seasons 1-3, so I thought it could be forgiven. I figured that the original music was an artistic decision on the part of the creators of the series. If they couldn't get the rights at an affordable price for the DVDs, they would have to make more artistic decisions regarding replacement music. How bad could it be? How far could they go wrong?

Unfortunately, with Season 4, I am noticing it, and for me, I'm realizing how much the original choices of music were the heart of some... More Info about this DVD

Northern Exposure - The Complete Fifth Season DVD

Welcome back to Cicely, Alaska, where whimsy and magical realism are always in season. While Northern Exposure's heart is as big as all outdoors, its charms are starting to wear a little thin in its penultimate season, particularly John Cullum's New Age-y DJ McDreamy, Chris (one longs for that season 1 episode in which he lost his voice). But there is compensation in such sweet, unexpected moments as the one in "A River Doesn't Run Through It," in which bush pilot Maggie O'Connell (Janine Turner) finds the tape recorder of Dr. Joel Fleishman (Rob Morrow), who is out in the field, and, missing his voice, sits down to listen to one of his tapes. The long-awaited thawing of what Joel calls their "bizarre" relationship is this season's biggest development. Their efforts to "go out" and... More Info about this DVD

Wings - The Complete First and Second Seasons DVD

A popular and well-regarded comedy that ran for eight seasons in the '90s, Wings was created by David Angell, Peter Casey, and David Lee, the team that worked together on Cheers and later created Frasier. Tim Daly and Steven Weber play two brothers, Joe and Brian Hackett, respectively, who parted ways many years ago when a woman left Joe to marry Brian. Joe, the straitlaced do-everything-right brother, is running Sandpiper Air, a small airline on the island of Nantucket that runs commuter flights to the New England coast, when he reluctantly offers a job to Brian, the carefree brother who's also a pilot. Others who work at the airport are Helen (Crystal Bernard), the former girl-next-door who now works the lunch counter and aspires to be a professional cello player;... More Info about this DVD
