  • DVD Louis L'Amour's The Sacketts

Louis L'Amour's easy voice with its gentle rhythm sets the tone and pace of the film in a spoken introduction to this loping, rambling three-hour-plus TV-movie adaptation of his novels The Daybreakers and Sackett. Sam Elliot stars as the elder Sackett, a nomad hunting and trapping in the mountains who happens upon an ancient treasure. Tom Selleck and Jeff Osterhage are his younger siblings, forced to leave home to avoid a Hatfield and McCoy situation. As the Sackett brothers wind their way across the Midwest prairies and mountains we join them on cattle drives and gold hunts, in gunfights and fistfights, and in a climactic showdown as they find their place in the world. This 1979 film rambles and meanders like a lazy river winding through a beautiful landscape of peaks and plains and forests, punctuated by the occasional gunfight and enlivened by a story that celebrates both the open range and the taming of the towns. Elliot looks almost young but flashes his savage eyes behind a thick black beard, while Selleck's easygoing manner is backed up with a stony-faced determination. The excellent cast includes a veritable who's who of Western character actors: Glenn Ford, Ben Johnson, Gilbert Roland, Gene Evans, Jack Elam, Slim Pickens, L.Q. Jones, Mercedes McCambridge, and Pat Buttram. Followed in 1982 by The Shadow Riders, which reunited the three stars and even a few members of the supporting cast in a tale of three different brothers. --Sean Axmaker

Review(s): DVD Louis L'Amour's The Sacketts
    A wonderful adaptation

One of my favorite Louis L'Amour adaptations; the casting is exactly what I would imagine when reading the books. The story is the classic western story told in large scale drama as big as the country it covers. The classic western movie lover will love this movie. It is a must have for the Louis L'Amour fan and the classic western movie fan alike. Perhaps my favorite L'Amour-inspired adaptation yet.

    Who paid these reviewers?

I can not understand these raving reviews. The comparison to Lonesome dove makes me almost as queasy as this series. The acting by Sam Eliot was over the top.Lifetime relationships were formed and broken in minutes over the most trivial of things. The character played by Tom Selleck loses a wife and is tomcatting in the next five minutes.I did not know whether to laugh or cry with the carboard characters portrayed by the mother and the dumb blonde Selleck fell in love with. The ending was lame and anticlimatic.Veteran actors such as Glen Ford/Slim Pickens/John Vernon/etc reduced to Monty Python status.Did these people really see westerns such as Lone Dove or Broken Trail or Unforgiven or The Outlaw Josey Wales just to name a few??? I honestly feel these "reviewers" were blind or bought. You should have partial stars as this series does not even rate one.I want my money back.

    Good Movies

I bought the movie, The Sacketts, for my son. He loves it! I always find what I'm looking for with Amazon.

Last Stand at Saber River DVD

Tom Selleck shows a harder side of his persona as a disillusioned Confederate who returns home in the waning days of the Civil War in this adaptation of the Elmore Leonard novel. His wife, Suzy Amis, isn't ready to forgive him for leaving his family behind for the "adventure" of war, and his children hardly remember him. Haunted by his actions in the war and caught in a power struggle in the Arizona territory, Selleck's soul-scarred survivor makes a last stand to protect the only thing left that matters to him--his homestead and his family. The film has its share of gunfights, showdowns, conspiracies, and Civil War rivalries, and even a runaway stagecoach, but its power lies in the somber exploration of how misunderstandings and conflicts tear at a marriage during such a volatile time,...
