DVD South Pacific in Concert from Carnegie Hall
Rodgers and Hammerstein's glorious score for South Pacific gets a surge of welcome new energy in this 2005 Carnegie Hall concert. Brian Stokes Mitchell (Kiss Me Kate, Ragtime) is in spectacular voice singing "Some Enchanted Evening" and "This Nearly Was Mine," but the real discovery is country star Reba McEntire as Nellie Forbush. McEntire won raves when she replaced Bernadette Peters in Annie Get Your Gun, but her performance was never recorded and released to the general public. Now we can understand the raves for ourselves, because McEntire is a joy in the role that features such standards as "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" and "A Wonderful Guy." Those used to Mary Martin (which is nearly everybody) will need to get used to McEntire's scoops and twang, but it's not inappropriate for a character hailing from Little Rock, Arkansas. Jason Danieley (The Full Monty) and Lillias White are both effective as Lieutenant Cable and Bloody Mary, respectively, and Alec Baldwin doesn't embarrass himself any more than he's supposed to as Billis. Because it's a concert performance, the singers carry books and don't wear costumes other than in "Honey Bun" (so the nurses jog in the surf and wash their hair wearing black gowns). But much of the story is conveyed through dialogue excerpts, so the 113-minute DVD is substantially longer than the 78-minute CD. --David Horiuchi |

| Don't forget Lillias White as Bloody Mary! | |
I agree wholeheartedly with most of the glowing reviews about the performance and the overall excellence of the cast, but would like to add that Lillias White made an outstanding Bloody Mary, both for her acting and singing skills and it was a shame that she was not the third photo on the cover, rather than Alec Baldwin. I am sure the marketing decision went for star power, but she was actually a more important factor in the show.

| Wonderful South Pacific | |
I believe that Reba McEntire felt she was taking a chance on this but her performance was perfect. I have been a fan of South Pacific since I saw the original as a child. I like new interpretations of shows, opera, and such. No one ever said a country singer couldn't play Nellie and those who don't like Brian Stokes Mitchell's operatic voice in it should be informed that Ezio Pinza was the original Emile de Becque and Georgio Tozzi, the voice in the movie. Both were great stars of the Metropolitan Opera.
The person who did a great job as musical conductor, and I don't think he was mentioned above, was Paul Gemignani. Also kudos to Walter Bobbie as Director - never less than perfect as a director or actor/singer.
I truly enjoyed it.

| Some Enchanted Evening | |
I was rejuvenated, eighteen again, when I knew all the words to the music from South Pacific but had never had the opportunity to see it performed. South Pacific in Concert was enthralling, joyous & heartbreaking. Reba McEntire & all the cast were perfect & I was transported to another time, to that one perfect island, as fresh as it was so many years ago.
