  • DVD Supernatural - The Complete First Season

Call it Kolchak: The Night Stalker, The College Years or Buffy the Vampire Slayer for Boys, but the horror series Supernatural delivers some of the most satisfying small-screen scares in recent memory. The premise is deceptively simple: brothers Sam and Dean (Jared Padalecki from Gilmore Girls and Jensen Ackles, both appealing) travel the darker corners of the American landscape in search of their father, who's gone missing while hunting the malevolent forces that lead to the death of their mother. In the course of their search, the siblings encounter a host of otherworldly creatures, including vampires, ghosts, and witches, as well as such distinctly American phenomena as the urban-legend favorite the Hook ("Hookman"), monsters from Native American mythology ("Wendigo"), and fearful figures from children's games ("Bloody Mary"). Supernatural's integration of elements from American pop culture and folklore, combined with its skilled cast and crew (creator/co-writer Erik Kripke delivered 2005's Boogeyman, while director/executive producer David Nutter is a veteran of The X-Files and Millennium), and better-than-average attempts at atmosphere and suspense place the series well above the other spookshow programs that arrived on networks at about the same time (Invasion, Night Stalker), and should hold considerable appeal for fans of frightful fare.

The six-disc set contains all 22 episodes of the debut season, with commentary by Ackles and Padalecki on "Phantom Traveler" and Nutter, Kripke, and producer Peter Johnson on the pilot episode; two making-of documentaries (one on the show itself, and the other on its stars), as well as a brace of unaired scenes and a gag reel round out the set. For those with DVD-ROM capabilities, the set also includes a link to a web site which offers a sneak preview at season 2 and the pilot script, among other bonus features. --Paul Gaita

Review(s): DVD Supernatural - The Complete First Season
This Show Was Made For Ex-X-Philes

    - John Shiban, Kim Manners, David Nutter... These guys are the part of the mainstay writers, directors, and producers of Supernatural and they do just as good a job as they did with the X-Files.
    - The music is unbelievably good. To be honest, I wasn't that much of a classic rock fan until I watched this show contemporize the genre and I can't get enough. Boston, Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, The Chambers Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kansas, Foreigner, Scorpions, Rolling Stones... I could go on, but I'll stop.
    - Character development, in large part due to Robert Singer, apparently, is really well-scripted. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles do a fantastic job keeping their characters solid. We're in the middle of a repeat dip in season 2, but overall the episodes depicting the transitions in motivations for the brothers are impressively smooth. Rah rah to Jared and Jensen's acting!
    - The supernatural things encountered in each episode are real mythological/folk lore/urban legend figures. I don't think this is as big of a deal, but I think Eric Kripke believes that this means his show holds a certain amount of educational integrity, which is fine. X-Files always had a link to reality, as well (I mean you'd have to stretch things a bit, I guess), so nothing new. I just want to say, though, that Eric Kripke is a great guy who a) loves classic rock and added the sound track to his show deliberately, b) gives online interviews, indicating a great open attitude towards fans of the show, and c) knows very well where the show is going and how it will end after a predicted 5 or 6 seasons. He often (and rightfully) slights shows a mite that're similar in format to LOST since they never answer the questions they bring up in previous episodes. Unfortunately this is really similar to how X-Files ended, which was a heart-breaking disappointment to X-Philes (Chris Carter couldn't get over it, either).
    - This is the second major reason why I got into this show: both Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are two genuinely good-looking guys. I don't want to sound shallow, but watching two good-looking guys battle evil/supernatural forces is pretty much the coolest thing, especially if the program has X-Files alumnae to support them (which is why I gave this show a shot when I first heard about it/started to watch it).

I can't stress how great this show is. I'm in finals at college right now and if I couldn't take a break and escape into the world of Supernatural just for an hour to take the heat off, I don't know what I'd do.

P.S. The extras on this DVD are invaluable. Jensen Ackles is amazing.
P.S.S. I saw a review mention that downloading shows on the internet doesn't interfere with DVD season sales. Whoever that was, they're right. I watched and rewatched the episodes until the DVD season one came out and I bought it (full price gasp!). I don't usually own tv show DVDs, but I suppose I can boast X-Files and Supernatural, now.

    Seriously. Awesome Show.

    DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!

I admit that I hadn't been watching this show since it started. I had heard about it, but since it was on the WB, I assumed like many people that it would be teeny-bopper crap. Then, somehow, the first episode magically appeared on my hard drive after season one was over. I watched it and was hooked. I got all the other episodes (they too magically appeared) and I couldn't believe I had almost missed this awesome show. If you were a fan of the X-Files, you will love this show. Not only are the monsters scary, but the complex and emotional relationship between the two brothers is brilliantly played. In particular, Jensen Ackles is a very talented actor. Where the heck has he been hiding, I wonder? This is a show that everyone can enjoy. I'm 27 and I love it, and I bought the Season One DVD (note to Warner Bros. and the MPAA, letting people download tv shows free doesn't hurt DVD sales) and now my mother, who is 49, is absolutely hooked as well. There's just nothing bad about this show. Great writing, great acting, great music. Go ahead and buy it, you won't be disappointed.

    I never miss an episode

This show has not had a bad episode yet. Simply put, two brothers hunt the paranormal dangerous down to make the world a safer place. The writing and acting on this is superb. I love the chemistry between the two brothers, Sam is the optimistic and hopeful one, while older bro Dean is a little more sarcastic and wounded, but tough. Anyway, well worth your money and time.

Invasion - The Complete Series DVD

Following the success of Lost, Invasion was one of numerous sci-fi-themed shows that debuted in the fall of 2005. But unlike Threshold and Surface, Invasion had the distinct advantage of airing in ABC's slot right after Lost, at 10 p.m. on Wednesdays. Created and produced by Shaun Cassidy (yes, the former teen idol who also produced American Gothic), the series stars in a flurry with a devastating hurricane threatening a Florida city and a 21st-century family happens to be in the middle of it. There's park ranger Russell Groves (Eddie Cibrian) and his wife, Larkin (Lisa Sheridan), who's an inquisitive television reporter. Living with them is Larkin's no-account brother, Dave, who blogs about conspiracy theories and aliens while between... More Info about this DVD

Ghost Whisperer - The Complete First Season DVD

I've only watched part of the first season. Still I was brought to tears several times in 3 of the 4 shows I watched. I don't know about the co-leads but Jennifer Love Hewitt is a awesome actress and how she interacts with those who are crossing over as well as those grieving from their loss in simply incredible. This show has not only real heart but is suprisingly enlightening. More Info about this DVD

Prison Break - Season One DVD

Season one of Prison Break is great television. Here's the set-up. Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) is framed and wrongfully convicted for assassinating the Vice President's brother. Lincoln's brother Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller), who just happens to have designed Illinois' Fox River Penitentiary where Lincoln is on death row, hatches an elaborate escape plan. Michael's plan involves getting himself incarcerated in Fox River and smuggling the prison's blueprints by having them hidden in tattoos that cover his entire torso. Once inside, Michael must form alliances with a rogue's gallery of felons with their own sometimes unsavory motives. Meanwhile, on the outside, Lincoln's lawyer and one-time girlfriend Veronica Donovan (Robin Tunney), pursued by Secret... More Info about this DVD

Smallville - The Complete Fifth Season DVD

Consistently solid with some major developments, the fifth season of Smallville kicks the characters off to college, but not before finishing the cataclysmic disaster that ended the fourth season. With Chloe transported to the Arctic Circle and Kryptonian supervillains in town, Clark (Tom Welling) is in the Fortress of Solitude meeting Jor-El (voiced by Terence Stamp). He gives up his powers, but to get them back will cost him the life of someone he loves.

The even bigger development is that Clark and Lana (Kristin Kreuk) finally give up their dalliances with others and become an official couple. That means the other girls in Clark's life become fifth and sixth wheels, so Chloe (Allison Mack) reveals the secret she's been keeping from Clark and becomes a best pal. ... More Info about this DVD
