DVD Alice in Wonderland
Alice returns from Wonderland only to discover she's on the wrong side of her living room mirror at the beginning of the second half of Irwin Allen's 1985 production, with teleplay by Paul Zindel and songs by Steve Allen (the three-hour film was broken into two parts for video, the first title being Alice in Wonderland). Before you can say "curiouser and curiouser" the jabberwocky is after her. It chases Alice back to a strange land where life appears to be one giant game of chess with pieces portrayed by the likes of Carol Channing and Harvey Korman. The 7-year-old longs to be home, but that doesn't stop her from enjoying some song and dance with Tweedledum and Tweedledee (Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme), watching a bout between the lion (Ernest Borgnine) and the unicorn (Beau Bridges), or being rescued by the White Knight (Lloyd Bridges). Despite the oddly low-tech visual effects from Star Wars's John Dykstra--the jabberwocky is so clearly a guy in a dragon suit--this thrillingly kitschy movie ably entertains. Where else will you see Merv Griffin as a train conductor, Sally Struthers and Donna Mills catfighting with Vegas-worthy flower headdresses, and Jonathan Winters as a crabby Humpty Dumpty before the fall? Adults who fondly remember the '70s and '80s and children 4 and older should enjoy this version of the fabled tale. --Kimberly Heinrichs
This is THE best-I have been waiting years for this DVD
This is by far the best Alice in Wonderland ever - My children are now 21 and 23 and still know every single word and song and dance to this movie. The tape my mom recorded off the tv in 1985 wore out long ago and I was afraid the same would happen to the VHS tapes we bought later. I'm buying one for us and each of the kids to show to their kids.
Hollywood Square Hell
Wholly cow! This thing's earned a five-star rating here!?!? I bought this as joke because I remember what a riot it was in 85. Boy, it just shows how widely people differ in taste. The musical numbers are just putrid, and about half of the has-been, Show-biz cast always looks grieved to be wearing those community-theatre-quality costumes. Maybe if ya were a kid when this came out, or had a small kid ya get some warn fuzzes off it, but I think it's schlock at it's schlockiest.
Great for families
I can so clearly remember watching this during the holidays with my parents and it is one of my best memories. Now, I am lucky enough to be able to watch it with my son and husband.
It has a great cast, fun songs and wonderful costumes.
All over it is just a fun family movie that you can watch over and over again and create your own memories.
A delicious combination of live-action, animation, and special effects tells the fantastical adventures of Alice as she returns to Wonderland, in this imaginative adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic story of the same name. Kate Beckinsale plays Alice, a young girl who steps through a magical mirror and is transported from the real world into an enchanted one of talking insects, nonsensical questions, and reversals of logic. Her journey is marked by mostly incomprehensible encounters with quirky characters such as Tweedledee and Tweedledum, Red Queen and White Queen, and Humpty Dumpty. Beckinsale's Alice is a believable blend of curiosity, poise, and impertinence whose presence in nearly every scene carries the film. Other strong performances include Desmond Barritt, as Humpty, who... More Info about this DVD Director(s): John Henderson DVD Release Date: Released the 11 January 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

You don't fool with Mother Nature, spit into the wind, remake Casablanca, or trash the land of Oz. Perhaps that is why the 1985 live-action sequel split critics and audiences alike. The 1939 classic musical is so beloved that it's almost impossible to imagine seeing Dorothy in shock therapy, a crumbled yellow brick road, the ruins of Emerald City, and the Tin Man turned into stone. But L. Frank Baum, the author of the original Oz books, portrayed just that with his continuing stories of Dorothy. When you get by these tough facts, the film version is solid entertainment for the over-7 set.
Dorothy (a 10-year-old Fairuza Balk in her debut) is back in Kansas, where Aunt Em (Piper Laurie) is at the end of her rope: her niece is not sleeping and going on about a place called... This is an impressive-looking version of Lewis Carroll's story originally produced for NBC-TV. Dreading a singing recital at her parents' lavish home, Alice falls into a strange world in pursuit of a large White Rabbit. The talented child actor Tina Majorino (Corrina, Corrina) plays Alice with all the good graces but mostly wanders through the story unquestioningly. Carroll's tale of whimsical, illogical adventures is a field day for designers Roger Hall and Alan Tomkins, costumer Charles Knode, Jim Henson's Creature Shop, and director Nick Willing (Photographing Fairies. Influenced by Time Bandits and Labyrinth (the latter also designed by the Henson company), the film has a splendid array of effects, many dealing with multiple perspectives as Alice...
