Review(s): DVD Gunsmoke - The Directors Collection
Definitely want more
ANY Gunsmoke episodes are welcomed. The 50th anniversary DVDs had more features, but the Amanda Blake interview and the radio shows are great. Would like to see more of the episodes that we don't get to see on TVLAND (aka seasons 1-10). I'm amazed at how gritty and engaging the first few seasons were.
The audio is an afterthought
This set, like the previous Gunsmoke 50th Anniversary set, is composed of pristine video episodes, several of which are accompanied by reasonably interesting director commentary and -- an inspired plus -- Viacom has included the original radio versions of four of the TV episodes. Many Gunsmoke fans actually prefer the originals, with William Conrad, Parley Baer and Howard McNear. But, sadly, in this DVD set, the audio quality of the radio episodes is unnecessarily mediocre, with some dropout-like fading. Better copies are available. Check the Radio Spirits collections for more respectful treatment of these extraordinary shows.
general overview
I was very glad to see Gumsmoke come to dvd. However I cannot give this set more than three stars! Why? Its not because these episodes are bad or that Gunsmoke is a so,so T.V. show. Quite the contrary. The reason why I only rate it three stars is there simply are not enough episodes of this fine show to satisfy me. I beleive it would have been better for Paramount Studios/CBS to have released seasonal sets instead of "Collectors Editons" or "Directors Collections" . If or when they do release seasonal sets, Then I will give it five stars!
I bought Rawhide Season 1 off of Amazon a few months ago. All four of my boys love it! Its nice watching a program without all the junk. It even keeps the two year olds' attention! Looking forward to more seasons. I received my copy of the DVDs last week and love every moment as I watch every show. The color and sound were good. Though no special features on these DVDs for those who like that kind of thing. In this first season you see Mr Briggs (Steven Hill) as the Mission Leader. He did a great job as Mission Leader. Also, another interesting note is that the tape recorder wasn't the only method use to give the mission brief at the beginning.
This is a must see for any fan on the Mission Impossible TV Series.

The movies in this second collection of Tarzan adventures pass the Samuel L. Jackson Snakes on a Plane title test. Either you want to own a film called Tarzan and the Leopard Woman or you don't. And if you're a fan of the original Tarzan movies, then no doubt you must. These are the last six Tarzan films to star Johnny Weissmuller in the iconic role that spawned a thousand hollers (so ingrained is Carol Burnett's imitation of his signature shout-out that Weissmuller's own performance seems lacking!). Produced for RKO, they are low-budget affairs, but really, who watches Tarzan movies for the production values? The more fake the backdrops and the more obvious the mismatched stock animal footage the better! Tarzan Triumphs (1943) is the best...
