DVD The Addams Family - Volume One
If The Munsters was a traditional family sitcom as reimagined by Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, The Addams Family is a macabre twist on Father Knows Best. The Munster and Addams clans made their TV debuts in 1964 and lasted two seasons before the networks buried them. The Addamses are now gloriously resurrected in this three-disc set that digs up the series' first 22 episodes (oddly, 12 shy of the complete first season). Inspired by Charles Addams's New Yorker cartoons, The Addams Family is fiendishly funny, with a dead-on cast that indelibly embodies Addams's characters. John Astin brings a demented glee to eccentric, frighteningly wealthy Gomez Addams. Carolyn Jones is bewitching as his pre-goth wife, Morticia, whom the Beatles might have had in mind when they sang, "Baby's in Black." Jackie Coogan is the electrifying Uncle Fester, with Ted Cassidy (who famously took a kick in the groin from Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) is the monstrous butler Lurch, whose "You rang?" entered the pop culture lexicon.
The Munsters was family friendly. The Addams Family is more sophisticated and wickedly funny. As Gomez notes at one point, "There's a touch of madness" in the Addams household, where "every day is Halloween." Bear rugs growl, a disembodied hand, Thing, delivers the mail, and a torture rack is good for what ails you. The children, Wednesday (Lisa Loring) and older brother Pugsley (Ken Weatherwax), enjoy such hobbies as playing autopsy or exploding model trains. Gomez and Morticia were one of television's most passionate couples, with Gomez being driven to arm-kissing ecstasy whenever Morticia spoke French. The last episode included in this collection, "Amnesia in the Addams Family," is a classic in which Gomez is rendered "normal" following a conk on the head. The look of disgust on Morticia and Lurch's face when he asks for a glass of milk is priceless. The "altogether ooky" extras include three episode commentaries, a featurette on Charles Addams, reminiscences from cast members Astin, Loring, and Weatherwax, a segment on the creation of the classic snap-snap theme song ("They're creepy and they're kooky...."), and the inevitable theme song sing-along. The Addams Family at last on DVD? As Gomez might exclaim: "Capital!" --Donald Liebenson
When I read Steven Greydanus' thumbs up review in the National Catholic Register I couldn't wait to get this set. As he points out, twelve episodes of the first season are missing, thus this is Volume One not Season One. No matter, these two slipcases hold two double-sides DVDs in a slender box making a reasonably- priced, affordable set.
I wondered if The Addams Family would be as great on DVD as I remembered it. I need not have worried. The Munsters and this series had some of the best writing of the mid-'sixties, and that's saying something. This black and white series is a delight from start to finish. The B&W enhances, rather than detracts from the eery tone of this rendition drawn from Charles Addams' New Yorker comics.
Moreover, this series shows that family-friendly shows don't have to be mindless, moralistic drivel and talk down to kids while boring their parents into a coma. Come on Hollywood! Make some great family shows again and we'll even hook our cables back up! Until then, we'll keep buying great old shows on DVD and spending our time with the Addams Family.
I am 52...
...so what do you think how I liked this DVD set?
I LOVE IT.
At last, for crying out loud. This is nostalgia at its best but that apart the product is excellent.
Video and audio quality?
First class, and the set has the special convenience (for me) of having Spanish subtitles and some episodes even have Spanish audio track, this being exactly the one I had when I was a kid and watched the program almost 40 years ago.
When I was a kid I liked the weird things and the train wrecks but now as an adult what I liked the most was that sweet love, mutual admiration and everyday passion between Morticia and Gomez. I liked that very much indeed.
Bonus material is not extensive but it is very good.
I guess, of course that if you are reading these lines is because you are trying to decide about purchasing the set. Well, if you allow me the arrogance...BUY IT. You will not regret it for a second.
Pure 60's camp, Munsters beware
There were two horror sitcoms in the early 1960s..The Munsters abd the Addams family. The Munsters were more monsters-the Addams family was horriable weird. What made ,the Addams fun is they thought they were normal
Normal--like an uncle who puts light bulbs in his mouth, a father with like blowing up model trains, a grandma with her caudron, a mother who loves her man eating planets, a bueler six feet tall who answer a bell with "YOU RANG" and a unbodied hand named Thing who does HANDy jobs around the house.
However there are family values. This is a family who loves each other and supports each other. They may be creepy, cooky, mysterious and ooky--however they aare entertaining
There are interviews and audio commentary as extras which sweeten this treasury of ADDAMS family treasues on this DVD
and those MUNSTERS, take off your masks and watch a really HORROR family
The fourth season of "Bewitched" is a delight. The series had established a universe of characters so that they had an excellent variety & balance by the fourth season. Several episodes were written with Darren away on business, presumably because Dick York was increasingly suffering from back problems. I thought that my favorite character Aunt Clara was well represented in episodes like "McTavish" where her warlock boyfriend Aucky buys a haunted castle that requires Samantha to zap over to England just as Darrin's parents are vacationing there. One professional reviewer did write, "Conspicuous by her absence throughout most of season four is Marion Lorne as 'Sam's' befuddled Aunt Clara, whose magical spells somehow always go awry. Seriously ill and suffering from a rapidly failing... More Info about this DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 24 October 2006 Usually ships in 24 hours

I received my copy of the DVDs last week and love every moment as I watch every show. The color and sound were good. Though no special features on these DVDs for those who like that kind of thing. In this first season you see Mr Briggs (Steven Hill) as the Mission Leader. He did a great job as Mission Leader. Also, another interesting note is that the tape recorder wasn't the only method use to give the mission brief at the beginning.
This is a must see for any fan on the Mission Impossible TV Series.
I wonder if we shall see the other seasons anytime soon? Nothing on the radar screen. More Info about this DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 05 December 2006 Usually ships in 6 to 11 days

As a child growing up in the 70's and 80's, I used to come home from school and watch The Munsters. I was absolutely fascinated with this series. The characters were hilarious, and the scripts were excellent! Now, the complete second season, comes to DVD in a 3 disc set. It features all 32 episodes from The Munsters second and final season. Don't forget about the 4 A&E Bios as bonus features! The 4 A&E Bios will be about, The Munsters, "America's First Family of Fright", Fred Gwynne, "More Than a Munster", Yvonne DeCarlo, "Gilded Lily", and Al Lewis, "Forever Grandpa". All packaged, in a Herman Munster head.
I would not miss the chance to own the second season of this fantastic family show!
Now, if you've only seen Season 2 episodes from TVLand, then you don't... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Fred Gwynne DVD Release Date: Released the 25 October 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

If you've got the others, grab this set as well. Looney Tunes have never looked better.
This time around, the box set is smaller and much more efficient. The previous sets had one disc per fold-out, which left extra space on the opposite side to fill up with dumb quotes from the shorts. Now the layout is much better.
The cover art however, could've been much better. It looks so much like the first volume - why couldn't they do something different? Volume 3's cover was refreshing, volume 4's looks bland. The gloss and emboss is nice, though.
I love the black and white shorts - the sense of humour in the early 30's shorts is totally different from later years. The characters would always make objects do things they weren't supposed to - like grabbing...
