I so enjoyed this series watching it as a child. It's every bit as good the second time around!! Good vs Bad never gets old especially when the hero is invincable.
Squeal, Ernest! Squeal!
This was one of my favorite television shows of the 80s. It took the concept of a super-helicopter that can literally destroy an entire city for no reason (which they do in several episodes) and gave it a sophisticated spin. Make no mistake, this series was grounded in gritty drama and was well before its time. The only thing to keep this from five stars in my opinion is: not enough Ernest Borgnine. I don't think I'm tipping my hand any by saying he was the finest actor of his generation and this series was his finest hour. I make my wife and kids watch it with me and always tell them, "This is what a real man is like, pay attention!" Also, there is no commentary track with Ernest, I know he's dead now but surely they have archival interviews that they could have stitched together for a commentary track on all the episodes. HUGE OVERSIGHT.
Character Driven Action
While it's true Jan Michael Vincent's alcohol addiction killed this show, it was still fun to watch while it lasted. The second season Episode 'Fallen Angel', written by guest-star and later Belasarius' wife Debra Pratt was a gem, involving a plausible cold-war plot-line, cool gunship sequences and some laugh-out-loud humor. The most amazing thing (to me) is the entire episode was shot on the Universal Back-Lot yet it does a pretty good job of convincing they actually went to East Germany.
Hip spy shows with covert agencies within agencies--like Alias and 24--are missing only one thing: A super-duper armor-plated helicopter with "nuclear-tipped shrike missiles." In the action series Airwolf, a mysterious national security agency called the Firm constructs a "Mach-one-plus chopper that can kick butt," only to have it stolen by the nefarious scientist who designed it (David Hemmings, Blowup, Barbarella). Desperate, the Firm turns to Stringfellow Hawke (Jan Michael Vincent), a soulful, cello-playing, art-loving, eagle-watching, guilt-ridden master pilot. Hawke refuses to help unless the Firm searches for his brother, who went MIA in 'Nam. Of course, he succeeds in his mission, but until the Firm fulfills its side of the bargain, he keeps the... I received my copy of the DVDs last week and love every moment as I watch every show. The color and sound were good. Though no special features on these DVDs for those who like that kind of thing. In this first season you see Mr Briggs (Steven Hill) as the Mission Leader. He did a great job as Mission Leader. Also, another interesting note is that the tape recorder wasn't the only method use to give the mission brief at the beginning.
This is a must see for any fan on the Mission Impossible TV Series.
I wonder if we shall see the other seasons anytime soon? Nothing on the radar screen. More Info about this DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 05 December 2006 Usually ships in 6 to 11 days
