DVD Loving Annabelle
A lot of taboos are broken in Loving Annabelle, even if the film itself remains remarkably tasteful--even demure. The central characters are two women, a teacher and her student, and the setting is an all-girls school (shades of Lost and Delirious). Annabelle (the smoldering Erin Kelly), a senior, is a rebellious rocker chick--the Beverly Hills version that is, i.e. highlighted hair, black eyeliner, and nose ring. Her senatorial mother ships her off to boarding school to shape up. Annabelle's hard-partying ways are starting to become an embarrassment. Miss Simone Bradley (the sympathetic Diane Gaidry) is a popular poetry teacher. She's a Catholic. Annabelle is not. Simone has a boyfriend, Annabelle is gay. Looks can be deceiving, however, and there's more to both than meets the eye. For one, Simone's relationship is not as secure as it appears. For another, Annabelle's ardor is so relentless it threatens to sway sympathy against her. She seems to have no regard for the damage an affair would inflict on her teacher's career. Nonetheless, Simone is not entirely resistant to her charms. Inspired by 1931's Mädchen in Uniform, writer/director Katherine Brooks preserves the forbidden relationship at the heart of the Weimar-era classic, but drops the political subtext. Consequently, she doesn't take on more than she can handle, but Loving Annabelle still feels a little slight. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
As some of you may or may not know this film was based off the 1931 German film, "Mädchen in Uniform." Which in it of itself is a lesbian classic. And Loving Annabelle, is destined to be another. If you are one of those people who listen to the commentary, as I am, you'd realize the amazing time constraints that Katherine Brooks was under to get this film shot and the tremendous talent by the actors to do their scenes under that sort of pressure. That only make me appricate this film more.
As far as the film itself, it follows some of the classic "cat and mouse" seductions that many lesbian films have, and like many of those, the climax of the film is the moment when Simone (Diane Gaidry) finally gives into Annabelle's (Erin Kelly) relentless, yet tender advances. However, unlike those films, the controversal under currant of the under-age student/teacher affair and Simone's struggle to curb her fellings make the climax all that more intense.
The storyline is well laid out, although like most films shot under tight time contraints (be it shooting or running time), there are one or two sub-plots that I would have liked to be better explained or explored. The ending is ambiguous, but it leaves you with a feeling of hope. And if you watch the alternate ending (which should have been the true ending in my book)you'll definately walk away with a good feeling as well as closure.
For those of you who appriciate cinematography, this film is beautifully shot. This may be me over-reaching for symbolism, but I think the fact that Simone is photographer-at-heart is reflected in the artistic shots that are thrown in here and there.
As for my overall review, this is one of the best lesbian films to be made this decade and definately makes my top ten. It's well acted, well shot and as I said leaves you with a feeling of hope, as well a wonderful quote at the end from Rilke, who is quoted several times through out the film. I definately give it an A.

I love this show and the only complaint I have for the third season is that it is too short. I don't like how series seem to get shorter with each successive season.
It is sad what happened to Dana. I was horrified. I am a breast cancer survivor who elected not to have chemo. Unfortunately one out of every 8 women will get breast cancer. Chemo is what kills many of these women...not the cancer itself. Chemo weakens your immune system, damages and sometimes destroys organs in our bodies and can even, ironically, cause cancers. Face it, we may not like to think about it, but this is a very real fact of life. I applaud the writers of The L Word for outing this disturbing fact. This BBC made-for-TV two-parter is a wonderful adaptation of the novel by the same name. In typical BBC fashion, the Victorian era sets and costumes are authentic, the camera work is artful, and the acting is superb. Perhaps most importantly, the recreation is very faithful to the book. The author of the novel, Sarah Waters, has an amazing talent for storytelling, suspense, and rich characterizations. In addition, there are several revelations and twists in the plot that will really surprise you if you haven't read the book first.
The casting and acting are uniformly excellent, including the Oscar-nominated actress Imelda Staunton, and I look forward to seeing more films by the two leading ladies, Sally Hawkins and Elaine Cassidy, both of whom were utterly believable and...
