  • DVD Miami Vice (Widescreen Edition)

Bearing absolutely no resemblance to the 1980s TV series that helped to propel Michael Mann into big-time filmmaking, Miami Vice is the kind of serious, and seriously stylish, crime drama that Mann does better than anyone else. As written by Mann himself, this undercover sting thriller doesn't reach the peak intensity of Mann's 1995 classic Heat, and it lacks the tight, nail-biting suspense of Collateral, but that doesn't mean it doesn't occasionally pack a wallop. As Miami detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs (respectively), Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx don't have to do much but mumble their plot-thickening dialogue and look ultra-cool in the casual cop attire, and their partnership is rather lifeless on screen (perhaps owing to the fact that this was a troubled production, with an actual shooting that occurred during filming, and Foxx's refusal to risk his life on dangerous locations in South America). But once Mann shifts into high gear with a plot to foil a powerful drug kingpin (Luis Tosar) and his ruthless middle-man (John Ortiz), Vice pays off with the kind of smart, realistic action that Mann's fans have come to expect. With Chinese superstar Gong Li as Crockett's love interest on the wrong side of the law, Miami Vice covers territory that's a little too familiar, and one suspects Mann's screenplay might've been punched up with a polish or two. Still, this is an above-average crime thriller that demands and rewards close attention, with a climactic shoot-out that's pure Mann, worthy of the brooding drama that precedes it. --Jeff Shannon

Review(s): DVD Miami Vice (Widescreen Edition)
did negative reviewers see the tv show

As a kid MIami Vice was my favorite. It was my reason for moving to Miami. The movie plays like the TV show just upated. You are expected to not be in the dark on the characters are. This is not a how they met movie.Several reviewers said it doesn't have enough action, well then they didn't watch the show knowing what to expect. It's an under cover movie which generally involve this thing called a plot. The acting does have some bad moments and the casting may not have been on point, but as in the show, the city was a character in the movie. This movie was made for the fan of the show and like I said this was a favorite when I was 5 I said when I grow up I'm gonna move to Miami and I did

    plot is tough to follow

I loved the 80's TV show so I was eager to see this. But boy is it different from the show. Don't expect to see Crockett's sailboat, his Scarab, his Spyder, or even Elvis. Don't expect to see the other vice cops either. The plot is tough to follow with a lot of fast dialogue with tons of jargon. But its a seemingly well made film that has me interested enough to watch it again so that I can hopefully understand the plot. The HD DVD picture quality was mixed. Some shots, whether night or day, looked very clear and sharp, while other shots (mostly in cars, boats, or planes) were much noiser. I have to wonder if they used 2 different cameras or if this was done for style. This is a pricy combo so it may be wise to just rent it if you're not sure you'll like it.

    Interesting movie, awesome cinematography

Okay, I've never seen any of the original tv series, being just a toddler in the 80's, so I'm not comparing this HD DVD release with it. I don't ever think I've seen a movie quite like this. Honestly, Michael Mann is the main character in this. The cinematography is just amazing and it looks incredible in HD. All the shots, camera angles, etc, look killer.

Like whenever there is a closeup of Crockett and Tubbs, it just looks cool and fitting. Farrell's Sonny Crockett looks like he stepped right out of the 80's, especially in the beginning scene in the rave/nightclub. The part where he's talking on his cell on the roof looks insane in HD. I almost think of this movie as "modern day 80's", if that makes sense. I think everyone should see this movie just to SEE it. Another success for Michael Mann.

World Trade Center (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition) DVD

Nicholas Cage and Michael Pena star as two New York City Port Authority police officers in this magnificent film by Oliver Stone which describes one of the darkest days in the history of the United States: September 11, 2001.

Cage stars as Sgt. John McLoughlin, and Pena stars as officer Will Jimeno. These two men, along with a crew of other officers, entered into the stricken World Trade Center shortly after the brutal terrorist attacks. Their job was to go up inside the tower and assist with rescue efforts. However, shortly after entering the buildings, the collapse began. The officers immediately dove for an elevator shaft; supposedly one of the strongest places in the building. Despite their quick thinking, McLoughlin, Jimeno, and the rest of the officers are buried... More Info about this DVD

Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) DVD

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the... More Info about this DVD

Superman Returns (Two-Disc Special Edition) DVD

If Richard Donner's 1978 feature film Superman: The Movie made us believe a man could fly, Bryan Singer's 2006 follow-up, Superman Returns, lets us remember that a superhero movie can make our spirits soar. Superman (played by newcomer Brandon Routh) comes back to Earth after a futile five-year search for his destroyed home planet of Krypton. As alter ego Clark Kent, he's eager to return to his job at the Daily Planet and to see Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth). Lois, however, has moved on: she now has a fiancé (James Marsden), a son (Tristan Leabu), and a Pulitzer Prize for her article entitled "Why the World Doesn't Need Superman." On top of this emotional curveball, his old archrival Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) is plotting the biggest land grab in history.

Mission - Impossible III (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition) DVD

At the time of its release, Mission: Impossible III's box office was plagued by the publicity backlash against couch-jumping star Tom Cruise. It's too bad, because this third installment of the spy thriller franchise deserved a better reception than it got. First-time feature director J.J. Abrams (bigwig TV director/producer of Lost, Alias, & Felicity) proves more than able-bodied in creating a Mission: Impossible that's leaner and less over-stylized than John Woo's sequel and less confusing than Brian De Palma's original. Plot is still a throwaway here (Cruise's Ethan Hunt rescues his kidnapped former trainee and works to steal a device that... well, we don't really know what it does, but it's something about mass destruction that costs $850 million),... Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (Unrated Widescreen Edition) DVD

Sweet baby Jesus, we thank you for blessing Will Ferrell and Adam McKay with the talent to create a NASCAR comedy as hilarious as Talladega Nights. The so-called "Ballad of Ricky Bobby" is hardly flawless in fact it's not always firing on all cylinders but with comedy star Ferrell and director McKay still hot from the success of their previous comedy hit Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, most of this 108-minute spoof of oval-track racing is so knee-slappin' funny that you can't help but surrender to the stupidity.
