A Disney "classic" that actually is a classic, Dumbo should be part of your video collection whether or not you have children. The storytelling was never as lean as in Dumbo, the songs rarely as haunting (or just plain weird), the characters rarely so well defined. The film pits the "cold, cruel, heartless" world that can't accept abnormality against a plucky, and mute, hero. Jumbo Jr. (Dumbo is a mean-spirited nickname) is ostracized from the circus pack shortly after his delivery by the stork because of his big ears. His mother sticks up for him and is shackled. He's jeered by children (an insightful scene has one boy poking fun at Dumbo's ears, even though the youngster's ears are also ungainly), used by the circus folk, and demoted to appearing with the clowns. "Christmas in the Clouds" was first featured at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. This film is light hearted comedy built in the tradition of Native American storytelling. The film had a limited release at the theatres, so I did get a chance to see it. After seeing the DVD rental, I definitely will add this to my collection.
Ray Clouds on Fire (Tim Vahle) comes back to his Tribe's reservation after personal struggles off the reservation. He is hired as the General Manager of the Tribe's ski resort. Joe (Sam Vlahos) is Ray's father who is exchanging letters with his pen pal Tina (Mariana Tosca) from New York. When Tina comes for a visit at the same time as a well known travel guide (M. Emmet Walsh) a case of mistaken identity develops into hilarious scenarios.

I have never laughed so hard in my life as to this collection. Calhoun the Lawyer, just cracks me up. Most of these shows, were oringinaly the radio shows. The show that really stands out to me, is kingfish sells Andy a Vacant lot. To me this is a classic of classics, I am afraid to play it though, to many times, as I might "Bust a gut", Every time I play that episode, I'm afraid I might choke to death from laughter. There are also three great Radio Episodes, House on a hillside,The vacation cottage, and the Great Dane. I haven't got through all 75 yet, but so far, the charaterization is fantasic, His wife,Safire, and mother in law, and also Calhoun are from the oringinal radio shows. The contents below are from unseen-cinema; they include the contents of a 160-page softcover Series Catalog, which is sold separately, but I think you would want. This is clearly a labor of love; though I can't imagine trying to watch all this in a month of Sundays, I could see dipping into it from time to time.

This is yet another fine Kino Video production of a deluxe 2-disc edition featuring more silent comedy by one of the era's foremost comedians, Harold Lloyd. It follows the first excellent Kino Video DVD, "The Harold Lloyd Collection" (Vol 1) which features the one-hour "Grandma's Boy" and seven shorter comedies. In this second volume there is even more to enjoy, with six short pre-1920 comedies on the first disc, and four longer films on the second disc from 1920-21 which show Lloyd's quick development in a few short years; each film being different in its own way, and showcasing the versatility and wide range of themes Lloyd offered his audiences. Although ranked alongside Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, it was Harold Lloyd who attracted the biggest audiences and box office... It's hard to take bad reviews seriously when everyone else says a film is great, especially a restored silent by a big name director. But hear me out...
I rented this based on the gushing reviews it's gotten and because I'm a big fan of silent films; but it's not just because of the production design. There's also the storytelling element, and in this regard, The Blue Bird, frankly, sucks.
Haven't heard of the story before? That's because this film is based on a very didactic 19th century play for children that has NOT withstood the test of time. It's sort of amusing at first, watching the characters of The Soul of Bread and The Soul of Water come to life in interpretive dance... sort of.. but then come the characters, one by one, like a long lecture, with names... The musical accompaniment for most of these seminal avant-garde films is very bad. A previous reviewer mentioned that it was done by "the best in the business." Well, I am of the opinion that, unfortunately, there are not enough interesting minds in that business (silent film scoring), or at least not enough employed by Kino Video, to make for a competent collection.
There is electric guitar (Creed-style riffing!!!). There is arbitrary "Frenchy" sounding music. And yes, there is even some dreaded Casio keyboard "vox" effect.
Who could possibly think that keyboard "vox" was a good idea? Not me.
These films, like all those Kino releases, are rare and under-appreciated, and worth owning on DVD because this is the only way you'll get them. I only wish... More Info About This DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 02 August 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours
