As the 2005 theatrical release of Serenity made clear, Firefly was a science fiction concept that deserved a second chance. Devoted fans (or "Browncoats") knew it all along, and with this well-packaged DVD set, those who missed the show's original broadcasts can see what they missed. Creator Joss Whedon's ambitious science-fiction Western (Whedon's third series after Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) was canceled after only 11 of these 14 episodes had aired on the Fox network, but history has proven that its demise was woefully premature. Whedon's generic hybrid got off to a shaky start when network executives demanded an action-packed one-hour premiere ("The Train Job"); in hindsight the intended two-hour pilot (also titled "Serenity," and oddly enough, the... The 5-star rating is for the program itself--the animated Star Trek adventures were intelligent, perhaps even before their time in terms of animated programming in the early 1970s.
However, the packaging leaves a lot to be desired. Other reviews & postings have noted cracked disk holders and other damage to the inside of the case resulting in scratched disks. If you are getting this as a gift for someone, check the inside of the package ASAP so you can replace it if necessary before seeing a disappointed face when the recipient opens it! Nothing has been done to stabilize the disks or disk holders in the case. My set arrived with a cracked disk sleeve & loose disks, but fortunately none of the disks in the set were damaged. This 1956 pop adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest is one of the best, most influential science fiction movies ever made. Its space explorers are the models for the crew of Star Trek's Enterprise, and the film's robot is clearly the prototype for Robby in Lost in Space. Walter Pidgeon is the Prospero figure, presiding over a paradisiacal world with his lovely young daughter and their servile droid. When the crew of a spaceship lands on the planet, they become aware of a sinister invisible force that threatens to destroy them. Great special effects and a bizarre electronic score help make this movie as fresh, imaginative, and fun as it was when first released. --Amazon.com

Doctor Who fans must take the bittersweet with the suspenseful in this four-part story arc from 1976, which pits the Doctor (Tom Baker) and companion Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) against the fossilized hand of an alien criminal which possesses a hideous will to live again. Discovered by the Doctor and Sarah during a trip to Earth that puts them in the middle of a mining blast, the hand belongs to Eldrad, a fugitive criminal from the planet Kastria who desires to regain his bodily form and return to his home. To do so, he possesses Sarah and the staff of a nearby nuclear reactor in order to use its power to regenerate, which leads to several eerie scenes with the reanimated hand that nicely evoke British horror features from the '60s and '70s. Well-liked by Baker-era fans,... More Info About This DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 07 November 2006 Usually ships in 24 hours

What's that? You say there's not enough fright in your life? Well, let your old fearsome friend, the Crypt Keeper, put some pep into your tired blood with another lucky 13 episodes of Tales from the Crypt, the shock-show series based on the infamous E.C. horror comics of the 1950s. As with Crypt's previous seasons, the gruesome formula in the 1993 Season 5 remains the same: Half-hour episodes rife with murderous spouses, the walking dead, and horrific twists of fate, liberally spiced up with gallons of gore and nudity, and featuring some of Hollywood's most famous faces behind and in front of the camera. The season's hellacious highlights are probably Gary Fleder's "Forever Ambergris," with Steve Buscemi and the Who's Roger Daltrey as rival combat photographers whose... With laughs and gross-outs aplenty, Slither is the best horror comedy since Shaun of the Dead. Having written for the jubilant trash-mongers at Troma Films before scripting 2004's well-received remake of Dawn of the Dead, writer-director James Gunn crafted this hilarious splatter-fest as an homage to the comically violent horror films of the 1970s and '80s, and he gets it just right with a low-budget look, perfect casting, grisly make-up effects and judicious use of CGI gore. The story's a deliberate monster-mash, borrowing from a dozen other movies with its plot about an invasion of slithery slug-like parasites from outer space, arriving (via meteorite) in the redneck town of Wheelsy, South Carolina, where they turn most of the local yokels into flesh-eating zombies....
