With the fate of our planet arguably hanging in the balance, An Inconvenient Truth may prove to be one of the most important and prescient documentaries of all time. As he jokingly refers to himself, "former President-elect" Al Gore felt an urgent personal calling to draw attention--as he had been doing throughout his political career--to the increasingly desperate crisis of global warming, and this riveting documentary is basically a filmed version (by respected TV director Davis Guggenheim) of the PowerPoint lecture that Gore has presented (by his own estimate, well over 1,000 times) to attentive audiences all over the world. Considering Gore's amiable, low-key approach to charts, graphs, statistics, and photographs that leave no room for doubt regarding the reality (not... Learn More

If the delightful spectacle of preteen kids dancing the foxtrot and the merengue isn't enough to lure you in, add the pressure of a dance competition and the triumph of troubled kids finding self-respect through discipline--if Mad Hot Ballroom were a Hollywood movie, it would be too corny for words. Instead, it's an engrossing documentary about a wildly successful after-school program in New York City. Mad Hot Ballroom follows a handful of kids in three different schools from the beginning of their dance classes to the night of the inter-school dance finals. Regrettably, the movie fails to pursue the dancers themselves; a few scenes provide glimpses of some smart, articulate kids with vivid personalities and compelling emotions, but the filmmakers make a minimal effort to... Spike Lee's chronicle of Katrina's advent, arrival, and aftermath is one of the most passionate, emotional, vibrant films of the last twenty years. It will move you to anger, sorrow, happiness, love, and best of all, an understanding of the amazing fragility and transitory nature of human life when confronted with epic destruction.
When Americans cheered at Emmerich's epic disaster film, "The Day After Tomorrow," little did we suspect that a disaster very much like it would be carved into the consciousness of our society, but this time with REAL victims. Worse still, Lee's film shows, brilliantly, the total incapacity of human civilization to deal with natural catastrophe on an epic scale. It also shows, with a very human face, the inner torture and destruction of those who... More Info About This DVD DVD Release Date: 19 December 2006

"I just want to play well, share the stage with my friends, give the best I can," says Neil Young before the concert that is the centerpiece of Heart of Gold. No problem, dude. Working with filmmaker Jonathan Demme, Young has come up with a gem--not all flash and bling-bling, but as understated as a single pearl, musically restrained yet emotionally open. Of course, neither Demme (an Oscar winner for The Silence of the Lambs; he also helmed Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense) nor Young would call it "a concert film"; the director describes it as "a dream concert, something that's literally being dreamt by Neil," while the singer-songwriter himself calls it "a multi-level story." Whatever, the project came together in 2005, as Young was finishing his Prairie Wind... March of the Penguins is a beautiful film. I loved the spectacular scenery and the story of the birds that have to fight so hard to live. The life of the Emperor Penguin is truly a study in survival.
I wasn't disappointed in the film, but would have liked to have a little more information. Some statistics about the weight and size of the birds would have been helpful. I did look that up and my encyclopedia reported that the Emperor was the largest of the penguins and could be as tall as 48 inches; however, it did not give the weight. I also wondered if a penguin mother who had lost her own baby would adopt an orphaned baby.
Everyone should see this arresting film. Nature is awesome!
The unlikeliest cult hit of 2004 was What the (Bleep) Do We Know?, a lecture on mysticism and science mixed into a sort-of narrative. Marlee Matlin stars in the dramatic thread, about a sourpuss photographer who begins to question her perceptions. Interviews with quantum physics experts and New Age authors are cut into this story, offering a vaguely convincing (and certainly mind-provoking) theory about... well, actually, it sounds a lot like the Power of Positive Thinking, when you get down to it. Talking heads (not identified until film's end) include JZ Knight, who appears in the movie channeling Ramtha, the ancient sage she claims communicates through her (other speakers are also associated with Knight's organization). What she says actually makes pretty good common... If this is the thing that most people are worried about in this world then they just might be blind. Please every docu film maker is trying to be like mike moore and make money off people who want to know the "truth." If he wanted us to see it why not put in on television so everyone can watch it. Oh he can't do that cause he is just as greedy and wants your money. Don't make this idiot rich but i know some people will buy this and do so. I don't care about walmart!
